This security update includes improvements and fixes that were a part of update KB4457139 (released September 20, 2018) and addresses the following issues:

• Security updates to Windows Media Player, Windows Graphics, Microsoft Graphics Component, Windows Storage and Filesystems, Windows Kernel, and the Microsoft JET Database Engine.

I'm a little puzzled. I have 2 updates with similar title at the start, one of which is unchecked. I usually only get the security and quality roll up, not two similarly titled ones. Do I install both or just the checked one?

The .NET Framework is totally different to the Security Monthly Quality Rollup and gets rolled out seperately. It is OK to install the top checked update. If you don't use the Malicious Software Removal Tool [I don't think many people do], then uncheck that update!

IMPORTANT: Make sure you create a System Restore Point before doing any of the above!

When running my daily system integrity check with SFC /scannow
it showed in the cbs.log that
KB4462923 corrupted wmploc.dll and mshtml.dll

As an un/re-install did not yield an error-free state, and
after a number of other avenues tested, this was found
https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/help/4462923/windows-7-update-kb4462923
and hence an uninstall of KB4462923 and related KB4457139 with
wusa.exe /uninstall /kb:xxxxxxx
was executed.
Then Windows Update found only KB4462923 to be necessary;
and installing that with KB4457139 out of the way worked flawlessly.

Hope this saves time for someone who faced the same problem

KB4457139 for Windows 7 comes with non-security improvements and fixes that are aimed at enterprises and businesses. The purpose of this optional update is to make an upgrade to Windows 10 a better experience. I would have passed on this one.

Since posting a week ago, this is still sitting in my windows update, still unchecked. Given the post above saying it's corrupted some dll files, is it best to hide it and not install?

Same question here too. The KB4462923 update also just appeared in my Windows Update as well.

It looks like KB4462923 was updated and re-released after looking at MUC with a new 11/1/2018 date.

It is more of a "windows update metadata" change for KB4462923.
hopefully this time it installs without error
