Techbench says "File not available for download." Do I need a password to use the site?

Which ISO file are you trying to download exactly?

They are obviously not all the same!

What I said was, that if you downloaded Win 7 Ultimate, then you could make all the versions of Win 7 x64 [Home Basic, Home Premium, Professional, Ultimate] available from that by removing the ei.cfg file in the sources folder.

You will NOT have to do anything with the downloaded ISO as you have Win 7 Ultimate SP1 x64 [see the quote from my post below]. You only need to delete the ei.cfg file if you had Home Basic, Home Premium or Professional. You just need to burn the ISO to a DVD or USB.

If the version of Windows you are installing is Windows 7 SP1 Ultimate, then there is NO need to remove the ei.cfg file as instructed above.

(Yup. I acquired my 2 Win7 machines only 2 years ago, one data folder copied from the D drive was empty, and I needed that data this week. I also have a few minor programs that run only on XP. This is OT, so I'm going to drop it.)

What did you use to burn the files to a DVD?

This computer,(specs in my sig,)with CDBurnerXP, making an iso. No, it's not just for XP. I D/L 3 versions last week, 2 by mistake before we spoke, but I burned only the one you pointed out. All are exactly 3,243,070KB, which would seem to indicate I'm not missing anything on the DVD.


I've found suggestions to make a USB installer, but the directions are confusing.

You won't believe this. When I posted a few days ago, the iso had refused to install, and tonight I was ready to use Rufus. I had left that machine on, and when I fired up the monitor, Win Ult. had already installed unattended, and it was ready for the Product Key.

So for future possible reinstalls or repairs, am I better off keeping my iso on a flashdrive, DVD, or both?

Brilliant! Sometimes it does appear to hang when installing, but if you are patient, it more often than not continues and you are able to complete the installation.

What I would do in your situation, is once you have got the OS upto date with all the WU [Windows Update] is to make a system image. This way, if things go wrong in the future, you will be able to restore your OS back to the exact same state it is after the re-installation and the WU have been done in a very short time, like 20 minutes or so instead of hours and hours.

There are two imaging programs [click the light blue text links] which are very popular among members here, the first is AOMEI Backupper Standard [FREE], and the second is Macrium Reflect [FREE].

It hung for hours. Thanks, I already use Macrium. I usually image with all the data in place, I hadn't thought of also imaging it before the data goes in. Brilliant. So I'm done here.
