RJ45 Ethernet port sudden death, really?

Hello, yesterday on my Thinkpad, connection was suddenly lost. Unplugged/replugged cable, checked router, but didn't get it back. I used WiFi in place, didn't want to reboot at that time.

Today i did and still nothing.. So i tried another cable : same, nothing. Reboot in another OS : same, nothing. Cleaned port/PC : still nothing. RJ45 LEDS do NOT turn on at anytime anymore.

While the issue happened, nothing harmful such as an electricity issue (blackout, etc) happened. Neither something usual. The cable has very rarely been pluged in/out, if ever:

Laptop stays on my desktop and never moves, so no need to do that. I'm therefore left wondering.. Because i'm reading sudden death without a reason shouldn't happen. Your thoughts?

Have you tried resetting your router by pulling the power plug on the back of it for about a minute and then plugging it back in?

Another option is to pull the power plug and then shut down. After maybe 5 minutes, reinsert the power plug and boot.

I did restart it yesterday, but not physically. Now i did and.. nothing

Electrical components degrade over time then go from working to broken in a sudden fashion. It happens.

I just wanted to clear something up. He said RJ45 for his ethernet but that uses a CAT cable.

unko- do you have one of those combination router/cable boxes? For instance, I have a separate cable box hooked to my router via ethernet and the router is connected to the computer via USB.

Connection is straight : Router>Computer. RJ45 & Ethernet is two different name, short & long, for thatport/interface, same thing.

I'm not sure I understand you. A ethernet connector and a RJ45 aren't interchangeable. But, it doesn't matter as long as you're using the correct one.

You didn't answer my question about the device. Some ISPs provide a box which has the router integrated into it. Others, like mine from Spectrum, don't include the router. That has to be purchased/installed separately.
