When I ran Windows Update today and this was shown, I dutifully selected it and it Failed "Code 800B0109 Windows Update encountered an unknown error." and no amount of retrying got it to download and run. Then I found a link at MS that just gave me Error 404 ie no such page found (maybe a Firefox thing).

Anyway I came here and found your post Brink and it seems your manual DL link is working. Hopefully my next run of WU will show "no new updates found". If not I'll edit this post... Thanks.

@maxseven, I am having this issue too... it keeps failing to install...
I will try the manual download link above too and report back..

even though it didn't appear to install... I just did a quick scan and exited without doing anything else as far as I can tell... says it found one thing but didn't tell me what file it was it found... ooh well.. probably a false positive... since I keep my system tight and clean...




thought the windows update entry did seem to disappear.. for this app..

Ok ... manual download of the link in the first post, and run the .exe manually ran OK for me.
Took about 5min to scan, no issues found.

I have decided to manually update it as it was still on October version.

FWIW after dl'ing Brink's link and running it (which worked fine, nothing found on my PC) a re-run of Windows Update came-up clean i.e. it no longer asked me to run the MSRT.

I have same issue. Do I dl the tool or the kb890830 from the catalog. I do not see my w-7 version in catalog, it's W-7 2009 sp-1

Now, it seems MS has deleted the defective kb890830. The list of Updates to install, said deleted one update. They then added a Service stack update. These usually mean revisions to the downloader / installer that handles the Update process.


So all is fixed... for now.

I don't understand how anyone could have downloaded MSRT manually or otherwise. Three times it failed to download for me. But I've just visited the MS website here to try and manually download it. But when I clicked on the link, all I got was a server error.

No wonder it failed to download.

I downloaded from here back then, still works:

It will update your version in few seconds behind the scenes and then will ask to scan your machine (what basically happens in the background when updating from the Windows Update)

However, once I installed it manually (when they stopped pushing it), it did update the version, it didn't just run anything.

How do I know?

I started MSRT before I updated and scanned the machine, thinking it might look for an update as part of the wizard. Since it didn't (still showed "October"), I manually downloaded the November (latest version) and once I ran it and went through the scanning wizard until it finished, I started it again from Start Menu and it did show "November" instead of "October" this time.

As for Windows 10 1909, seems like they resolved it as it updated automatically.

I guess you did not fully read the contents of this thread.. there are some useful links and comments that explain everything (and yes, seems to be pulled for now though totally available for manual download).
