Good day, all ...

I have the academic version genuine MS install disks -- a 32 bit install disk and a 64 bit upgrade disk. Academic versions are SUPPOSED to let you install multiple copies so long as the machines involved are used for academic purposes.

I have my main machine at home, a homebuilt desktop that contains ALL my academic software and records for the last 25 years or so (translated from my old DOS machines from 1985 into current format). I upgraded this machine about six months ago from Win 7/32 with the MS Win7/64 upgrade disk that came with the purchase of the academic versions of WIN 7 about 6 years ago.

I teach on two campuses and I have a laptop dedicated to each one. Both have Win7/32 installed from the same MS branded academic install disk. Some of the 3D printer programs are coming out 64 bit only so I reluctantly want to upgrade both of the lappys to 64 bit.

So far I've wasted about 3 days (20-30 hours) trying every trick I know to get that 64 bit software onto those two lappies with zero results to share. They just don't seem to like either Dell or Lenovo.

Thoughts? Tricks? Suggestions? Other than dumping these two machines into the river?

Thanks,

Jim

Hi Jweir,

Any W7 key, will allow you to install either version, (32/64)
however Academic keys have a specific number of installs you can make -depends on the agreement with MS
Your IT Admin group will know -

Doesn't matter what brand the desktop/Laptop is
They likely came as OEM, your academic licence keys will either be VLK or more likely MAK,
which then gives you the option for an upgrade, ie home to Pro or Education
note the Education product key gives you access to additional programs

Just perform either a clean intall with 64bit media, OR
MORE than likely just do a Factory reset, bet they are 64bit version

if you want to go further
run this tool on both the OEM machines and we can check whether they have the Educational product key
PRIOR TO THE ABOVE

Hi

The key currently in use is the standard W7 Pro DEFAULT
and therefor will never activate, or upgrade

i also see
you have recently re-installed this OS version, last week or so.
Did this comp come with W8 installed (silly little blue MS sticker), there are no W7 markers showing.

You will need the Academic key for this comp
(hopefully you have it on your Desktop machine - run the tool on it as well)

Hi

The key currently in use is the standard W7 Pro DEFAULT
and therefor will never activate, or upgrade.

That is interesting. I have no idea what that means, but it does not sound good. I'm willing to do almost anything to get this sucker into 64 bit. I've got a complete duplicate of the iinformation on this machine on my desktop, so we can't lose anything by trying. jw

No, this computer CAME with XP back in 2010 or so. Yes, I've been reinstalling W7/32 in a number of different ways to try and entice the 64 bit disk to take ahold.

You will need the Academic key for this comp
(hopefully you have it on your Desktop machine - run the tool on it as well)

The ONLY key I have is the one on the sticker that was on the disk jacket that the disks came with. The version was NOT supplied by the school; we have a software "company" that we set up in California that sells software to us directly if we can provide proof of employment (check stub, ID certificate, etc.) It was purchased through the Community College Foundation.

Many thanks for any help you can give ... Jim

Hi Jim,

Irrelevant but that machine might have had XP on it but it wasn't sold with it installed, as i said previously likely W8 it has all the indicators for it and EUFI boot option, which XP never used - way to early.

Right on to better news,
Your affiliate company that was set up SHOULD have the academic key you need.
MS provided schools/colleges with this type of licence to distribute to Teachers and Students.
(college paid given/sent to students free, Key only via Email, they then Accessed/downloaded from college Admin homepage)

THE ONLY KEY I HAVE Is this the same as the key on your desktop,

If so run the tool. I'll check it

If NOT provided its a W7 Professional key you can use it on the Lenovo, post results of tool again.

note
the Lenovo install is way out of date its only W7 and not W7 service pack 1.

You would be better getting the

win7 (including SP1) x64 installation media.

Then use the key from your desktop machine.

Very possibly. I told the company I would NOT buy a machine with Win8 on it and they probably scabbed in a version of XP. I changed the XP to Win7 as soon as I got it and it has remained thus for nearly ten years.

It would take a real leap of faith for them to give me the academic key after nearly ten years. All I want to do is strip off Win7/32 and put on /64 however I have to do it. Since I know I paid for the 64 bit disk, I'm not feeling any remorse for digging out 64 bit however I have to. Actually, I have TWO 32/64 bit pairs, Win7 Home Premium that came with another machine I have since sold. So, I've paid for it twice but don't have access to it.

THE ONLY KEY I HAVE Is this the same as the key on your desktop,

Hi Jim,

Thats got a standard Retail key on it.
The key can be transferred BUT cannot be active on 2 machines concurrently.

Lets see if we can get lucky on the Dell,
(has it got a W7 COA sticker on it.- try inside the battery compartment)

Win 7 64 bits it's only recommended if you have more than 4G of memory.

The ONLY reason I am trying to upgrade the lappies is that some of the 3d printer software coming out requires 64 bit. Other than that, I'd be happy to run 32 bit into the next century. THe Lenovo is the prime concern right now; the Dell can go a bit longer (but not a LONG bit) until I am forced to upgrade.

Upgrading the memory right now isn't in the cards. 4 gigs is about my limit until I get more familiar with the guts of the machine(s).

Thanks to all so far as we have come on this.

You would be better getting the

win7 (including SP1) x64 installation media.

Then use the key from your desktop machine.

Could you elaborate a bit. My bag is analog/RF/microwave. Computers are to me like a screwdriver. I don't need to know the metallurgy of the blade or the chemical formula for the plastic handle.
Just so it turns the screw. Point me, tell me, and I can follow directions. Are you saying to download that ISO and use it to load 64 bit onto the 32 bit machine using the key that I used to put 64 bit onto the desktop?

Thanks to all who are trying to lead me into the path of digital righteousness. Jim

Thanks, Roy, but if I can't get the Lenovo up on 64 bit, then doing the Dell isn't going to help. The Lenovo is my workhorse at my main campus and the Dell is more an add-on for another smaller campus.

Yes, the Dell has a WIN 7 sticker on the battery case cover with a product key on it. The Lenovo has no Microsoft sticker of any sort on it. I do notice when I go to install product on the Lenovo that it has the hard drive partitioned into a 100MB section and the remainder into a second section. WHen I go to do an installation of Win7/32 on that machine it calls that 100MB the C: drive and the larger section the E: drive. It will NOT let me into the C: section under any circumstances but when all is said and done, it calls that E: section the C: drive when loading programs and data. Strange.

I do have a virgin copy of WIN7/32 & 64 Home Premium that I do not believe is on any machine. Would that help get the 64 bit onto the Lenovo?

Thanks for all your help. Time here 0921 Sunday morning. I should be around the machine all day, but I'm building a temporary woodshed in advance of the snowstorm predicted for Wednesday.

Jim

Hi Jim,

The Lenovo disk set-up is non-standard, for a single boot OS comp.

The 100mb is the system reserved and should NOT have a drive letter
the part of the disk with the OS on it should be C
here's a screenshot of mine, can you post yours please

and likely why you cant perform the INTERNAL 64bit upgrade

SIW2 posted you a link for a W7 SP1 download, likely newer than your virgin copy
(does it have a COA key on it?)
AS i said previously you cannot use the Dell key on both comps.
We will get to that shortly, when i can PM you

Roy

It isn't clear to me what you are trying to do.

The only way to change from a 32 operating system to a 64 bit operating system is to "custom" install. "Upgrade" install will not work across different bit versions.

That is achieved by booting the installation media and selecting "custom install" do not select "upgrade install".

Then point the installer at the partition you want windows to be installed on.

Your windows license key is specific to a particular edition - e.g. Home Premium or Pro or Ultimate.

The license key is not specific to a bit version. It works with 32 bit and 64 bit.

Therefore, whatever edition you choose to install - you must have a license key for that edition to activate.

The DIAG you posted for the Lenovo shows there is an MSDM table on that machine. Most likely that contains an embedded key for windows 8 and therefore will automatically activate windows 8.

It will not automatically activate windows 7.

It is useful to know just in case you ever want to install win8 or sell/give away the Lenovo machine in future.

You can check the MSDM table by running produkey. That should show you the MSDM key. You will be able to check what edition (HOME or Pro) the windows 8 embedded key is for.

Is there a Windows.Old folder on your lenovo containing your earlier activated windows 7 ?.

It will depend how many times and the method by which you have subsequently tried to install on the Lenovo.

If that is there, you can get the activation from it.
