I was sort of wondering (without wishing to make a new thread on this) which updates, if any, would be recommended to try and install before end of support next week.

I just put a new machine together with Win7 Pro and the Simplix update package. Since then it's downloaded ~10 or so "important" (lol) updates before I remembered to turn that off, though I put a stop to auto-installing them via group policy. I'm very interested in avoiding the Win10 "upgrade" nagware in particular, and I don't know which update number it's in. But I wouldn't be opposed to actual security updates if available (I mean, possible noob question but, if MS says it's a security update, can we actually trust them that it's just that?).

Just did a chat with MS agent...

did said no extended support purchase for end users like me...:(

said most issues caused by users insufficient hdd storage space thus have issues during Win 10 updates...

the amount of updates and more updates to patch previous update issues... think this would need bigger hdd storage space too:rolleyes:

Windows 10 uses a significant amount less disk space than windows 7 Did on install so this statement from the agent is confusing bordering on incompetent

Faster booting, smaller footprint make Windows 10 an easy upgrade for old PCs | Ars Technica

If you consider the differences between the lifetime designs of Windows 7 and windows 10 ...

Windows 7 needs room for up to ten years of updates, windows 10 only needs enough space for eighteen months and windows 7 23GB without updates is around eight GB larger on disk than Windows 10 is including updates 15GB.

If you have enough space to run Windows 7 you have more than enough for windows 10

   Note
figures quoted are for OS only - No user software is included

During the update process the install creates an Backup of the existing install that remains for ten days or so for rollback that could cause issue on large installs on small hard Disks which may be twhat the MS agent was getting confused with

Now that makes sense to me - I had W10 on this computer and on Hubbies Lap top - just didnt like it - so used to W7 which was just fantastic new version of XP with improvements - both those 2 of the very best IMHO fm MS - felt 10 just didnt shape up.

Now since it has been around and supposedly grown during that time - and W7 is no longer going to be supported, I reluctantly will now do the next step and re-install W10 using tool.

Crossing eveyrthing as I now start the process - making sure nothing gets left behind I might need - always have had extra HD 1T where put anything needed for future or re-install etc but a new image would be good just in case...........
Good luck guys

Well thats no good - went through process W10 downloaded updated and then said no good and restored me back to W7. During the process it did say something needs fixing shall it scan. Maybe what has been troubling me for ever.
Only thing to do is to buy a new cmputer I guess mine is circa 2013 and had a bit of trouble lately - done 2 renstalls over last year due to whatever it is - I cant find a problem but seems MS did.

And as I want a Tower as have all the keyboard monitor quite new etc - its an all in one these days mainly fm quick look up for a tower via E Bay- refurbished not much more than buying W10 disc, plus then haved got a newer computer.
Now tried updating the laptop to try to get it up to W10 and its say no updates found.

So maybe at end of updates forever and ever Amen for 7.

Some of those offered on Ebay are quite cheap less than $300 buys you tower with 16gb ssd etc refurbished with even a short warranty.

I built mine in 2010 and upgrade to W10 after having a few minor issues.....but after that it was plain sailing.

I'd recommend posting your specific problems you are having with upgrading over at at our sister site.

Problem is I have no idea what stopped it - didnt say - just that unable to load and restored back etc. I'm not that good just average user - when it comes to problems with the actual OS. Which is why I do reinstalls. Years back when first had a problem - found it expensive charged $200 before they even started. So today will have doubled likely. So a second hand refurbished will do the job and posted direct to my door. Thanks though good suggestion.

I couldn't join W10 as first off thought log in and cant - then tried to join and said used up all my tries etc.
Anyway I found event logs but haven't got a clue how to get to upload them for you or W10 folk to read why I cant get W10 on this computer. Now have tried on lap top and that too failed. I am wondering if this is just now normal when anyone tries. Both had W10 back in 2016 and both rolled back so its not that they cant take it as smaller anyway than W7 for so told.
As said why spend money - maybe have to the end buy eh W10 - need bigger disc than I have currently.
