x64 using up all 4g of my memory after being left on

I tried doing a search beforehand, but nothing really helped for me. After leaving on my system overnight, I will awaken to see that there is maybe only 5% of free memory left and the rest is taken up by something which I can't seem to figure out. The applications I leave on overnight are usually my game (Atlantica Online), windows live, firefox/chrome, kaspersky and utorrent which run at around 66% of my memory when I use them after a clean boot.

If it was using all that ram effectively, I wouldn't mind, but my computer lags very hard with all that memory used up, to the point of opening reopening firefox will take around 20 to 30 seconds just to load the default homepage with no extra tabs.

Some of my computer specs are [email protected], 8800gts 320mb, and 4gb ram. Here are some screenshots to help identify the problem, but in these screens, it seems to be a lot better as usually it just says the "in use" memory in performance monitor is 4xxx mb and everything else is basically non-existant. If you need anything, please let me know and I'll get it up as well.

The memory load goes down slightly, but the overall memory of my system is still being used up somehow. I tried disabling it on multiple occasions in 1 hour increments, but I'll try leaving it off the whole day for now and see if that helps.

Uninstalling it might make for a better test.

use Microsoft Security Essentials for a couple of days and see if the problem stops.

Also make sure all other programs are up to date.

EDIT - A quicky google search indicates that Atlantica Online could have memory leak issues. Maybe that app is the culprit.

All of my systems still run fastest on XP 32-bit for the most part. Win7 is fun to play with, but I still prefer XP for raw speed, security, and functionality.

Thanks for the reply guys.

@sup
My brother plays the same game on his laptop and he leaves it on as much as me, but his laptop doesn't have the same problem. I'm not sure about the memory leak, but atlantica will usually never go past 700mb for me at most. Even then, an extra 300mb wouldn't take up all my memory, unless the memory leak doesn't show up on the same process as the game in task manager (not sure on this, please let me know). I'll try uninstalling kaspersky today and use what you recommended, thanks.

It's likely not a problem then. Yes, memory leak of a process is often detectable through task manager or performance monitor.

Kaspersky on the other hand is probably a different story, because if memory serves me (no pun intended) it will install a multitude of drivers deep into the system.

I noticed you have a huge amount of "handles" showing in task manager (746,383). That's ~104 times more than I see on my computer (7,146). You can check the amount of handles per process by enabling the Handles column in Task manager. It might lead you in the right direction to determine the source of the problem.

Also, since chinga69 had a similar problem perhaps he will share his solution.

My handles now show that I have over a million, but I looked at my handles column and there is no where near the amount that it says it has.

This could possibly be the problem, but not sure of how to fix it if I can't tell what is directly giving me the problem.

Oh yes, it could certainly be The Problem. Those handles are consuming paged pool memory (check out the "paged" counter in the same screenshot), and a 32-bit system would've collapsed in a heap long ago (it's got far less paged pool to deal out).

Great catch sup3rsprt. I'd give you rep again but it won't let me yet :)

Do you know what type of resource is being leaked in your case? Is it attributable to a process? If so, does the act of restarting the process/service have the effect of "resetting" the situation?

all i have seen so far is
sql server use up to 800 meg of ram
then media portal freezes and when i check some how mediaportal exe has taken the ram some how
i havent checked any further but i have turned on handles now so will check if i can find out more now
it can run for 2 hours or 2 days then the problem shows up

SQLServer attempts to collect as much memory as it can get its hands on, but it's all given back when it's needed. (SQL's own internal memory management complexity rivals that of the OS.)

The fact that your symptom is periodic and measured in days-after-reboot is strongly suggestive of a resource leak. It may not be a handle leak though - there are many other different types of memory/resources which are sometimes leaked due to programming oversights.

We should probably give the OP their thread back, but if you'd like to troubleshoot, I or others here can possibly help.
