Solved Laptop wont boot from the hard drive

Trying to fix a neighbours ACER Aspire 5810t laptop (which they dropped this morning while it was switched off) It wont boot from the hard drive now so I suspect the HD is damaged. I'm trying to run a diagnostic on the HD from the command prompt using this tutorial Disk Check but neither F8 or F5 is taking me to ABO. Anything else I can try to work out if the HD is damaged? They seem prepared to invest in a new laptop so don't want to spend too much time on this, for the pupose of maybe recovering data at least..

Download Windows 10 Recovery Tools - Bootable Rescue Disk Solved - Windows 10 Forums
Make a boot able USB drive, boot from it and you will find many tools to test the disk.
From the tool you can run Seagate diagnostic on your disk.
If the disk has failed, my suggestion is to buy a SSD and install win 7 on it.

How would a Windows 10 recovery tool help? I clicked on one of the links and my ESET wouldn't allow me to open the page, so not sure about this. Not sure what to do. I downloaded a USB diagnostic from seagate (assuming the HD is seagate which I am unable to find out) and try to get it to boot from a USB without any success.

I'm pretty much stumbling about in the dark here. I think they should just buy a new laptop.

Failing that maybe they have a disk image on their back up hard drive. I'm not sure how they are backing up but appear to be using a program so maybe I can get it to boot from there tomorrow.

To test your disk the USB boot able drive can have any OS, including Linux so Windows 10 Recovery Tools - Bootable Rescue Disk Solved - Windows 10 Forums will do the job.

Changing a HDD with a SSD will cost only the drive (US$ 65 for 480G) and it will make the laptop better than a new with Win 10

Does it matter if it's 32 or 64 bit? I don't know anything about this laptop.

Kyhi Recovery toll has a 32 and 64 bits version.
For disk test, it doesn't matter witch version you use and what OS is on the disk.
I would use the 64 bits.

For what I've seen, Aspire 5810t came with Vista.

They said it was Win 7. So I just drop one of these onto a USB and boot from it and it will allow me to perform basic diagnostics?

I'm handing this back and they can take it to a professional and pay them. This link you directed me to is downloading some torrent through Vuze from a foreign site, it's really slow and I can't see where it's saving it to my drive. Don't trust that sorry.

You can burn a DVD and boot from it.
To make a USB Boot able drive (min 2G), you have to extract the files from the iso to the USB and set it active.
Use Rufus to do it.

I started a discussion on a tutorial thread. The matter hasn't been solved, and while this is probably not your fault I'm not going to mark it as solved because the advice given did not result in me gaining access to ABO.



The fact of the matter is I've got a thousand things to deal with in my own life and involving computers and I've had this dumped on me. I've given it my best shot and I'm now handing it back to them and they can deal with it themselves. Get a new computer. Task one: Make a freaking back up disk!

OK so after 10 hours lying unconscious in a horizontal position I had one more shot at this. Worked out how to bypass my ESET and downloaded both these files, tried dropping both onto a USB and booting the computer from that - to no avail. Not sure if I was doing that wrong or what.



Also got a hold of the external HD they were using on the off chance they had created a disk image on there and when I try to boot from it said "nltdr is missing"


I also noticed that IDE0 and IDE1 are not showing details of the hard drive in the BIOS which I assume means either the HD has failed or it has possibly become disconnected when it was dropped? Thought about opening it up to see if that was the case but the mini screw driver set is lost...

I had a similar issue with an Elitebook that was dropped. The hard drive was able to move just far enough(from the drop) to disconnect it from the MB. Secured the hdd in place & computer booted right up. If you have any hardware to connect the dropped laptop's hard drive to another computer, that might reveal if the drive is damaged.

I burned a DVD from it and have got it to boot, but it just sticks on the Windows 10 logo. Tried F8ing into ABO and that didn't work either.

Update. I now have a Windows 10 OS on it. It eventually loaded. No sign of a C drive anywhere, which I guess means the main hard drive has either failed or disconnected. I'll mark this thread as solved now. I'm still unclear as to what has happened to the main drive though.
