Solved Open in external browser from RSS application no longer works

I'm still using RSS Bandit and it works quite well even if it hasn't been updated for ages.

Now, all of a sudden, the Open the Configured Default Web Browser option stopped working.

I downloaded QuiteRSS, another desktop based RSS application, and the same thing happens there.

Now, I test both these applications on a Windows 10 machine and the Open in an External Browser works there. So what could be the problem?

An update in Windows 7 made the above type of opening stop working?

Or something in my Windows 7 has changed and broke what worked before?

Something else?

It appears you are using a browser like Firefox or Chrome to open your RSS reader? If so, go into your browser settings and find something like 'applications' and chose your RSS reader to open RSS feeds. What browser are you using and I can tell you how to do this.

I don't suspect a Windows update to muck this up, but a browser update.

Now if the reverse is true where you can't open an RSS feed in your RSS feed program, then in the RSS reader its self you need to make sure your configured browser is set as default.

Note: In my browser Pale Moon it's called Web Feed and under applications you can also chose what default App opens podcasts.

I'm not very good at explaining things. It is actually that I'm trying to open a web-browser tab from the desktop application. Both RSS-applications do have internal browsers but if you want to open the link in a web-browser tab instead you double-click the link and it opens in a browser.

Just now I discovered that I can not open the web-browser tab from TextPad either which I could before. Textpad is a desktop editor and if there's a web-link in a file you can open that link from inside TextPad.

I guess I have to experiment some more to try to isolate the probable cause further.

Yes, there are options in the RSS-applications to set what web-browser you want to open a link in but first of all I didn't change anything to cause to problem and secondly I have tried the different options available.

As the problem now also is manifest in both TextPad, as already mentioned, and in OpenOffice I think there's some file association issue. I think I had a blue screen prior to this problem occurring and I believe that sometimes can damage files necessary for settings to be preserved.

Changing to another browser helped. In a couple of the applications you couldn't do that, you would have to change the default browser. Was about to do that when Firefox wanted to update itself and the problem suddenly disappeared.

So it seems it was a combined Firefox - Windows 7 error. Exactly what we will probably never know.

I'm concerned about that BSOD though. Usually they are indicative of a driver or hardware.
