I recently switched to Windows Defender from another AV.

WD says it is running at my scheduled time.
How do I get the WD icon to show up in the bottom right Notification area (where I like to see it) when I don's see WD listed in the Customize list?

I'm using Win7 Pro.

Click the Action Center flag in the task bar and go to the settings. Click the options to show relevant items related to a firewall, anti-virus software, etc.

Defender is going to do much for you. If you want a better scan check out ClamWin.

Just get in the habit of scanning ALL downloads at Virus Total and check out Sandboxie for your browser. Depending on what it is, a general rule of thumb about Virus Total is four hits and it's probably malware.

F22,

Thanks for the prompt reply and advice on ClamWin.

I don't know what/where the Action Center is in Win7 nor could I find it in Google.

Please advise?

SIW2,

Win7 comes with Windows Defender.
I believe I can download Microsoft Security Essentials for win7 if that is better.
I also would like to continue with my Malwarebytes in addition to the AV if i can.

We discussed this before in your earlier thread....

The 'Defender' in Win7 isn't a proper AV, it only detects PUPs (potentially unwanted programs). For all my W7 machines I install Microsoft Security Essentials, a proper AV that uses the same scan engine and definitions as W10's Defender. It will have that reassuring icon in the system tray.

You can still download it here: https://www.microsoft.com/en-gb/down...s.aspx?id=5201

I was under the impression you had installed MSE and did have the icon...

Bree,

Thanks for that GREAT info.
I downloaded the 64k version and you were absolutely right that now I have my notification icon.

Can I still use my Malwarebytes along with MSE?

You don't want the WD icon. You want to show the 'Microsoft Security Client User Interface', that's the one for MSE. If you don't see it in the notification area, it may be in the hidden icons. Click the arrow next to the notification area and have a look. If it's there, click and drag it to the notification area.

My W7Pro laptops run MSE and WD as on-demand scanners. I have M-AM 2.x premium. Heimdal Security's Thor Premium Home AV. Thor is causing problems, I might goto EEK on-demand scanner or EAM/AV licensed version when Thor's hammer runs out. Anyway, OP's running WD Live Protection is aok! OP running MSE as an on-demand scanner can be icing on the cake. Also, my MSE and WD icons are PinnedToTaskbar, MSE is also in the Notifications Tray, I never tried very hard to get WD onto Notifications Tray.

I don't even use an anti-virus. I feel it's a waste of time to mess with a definition-based staraggy where polymorphic malware will still get in at the expense of resources and other crap from these new fangiled anti-virus programs that have aboat ton of fluff and can jack around with things. If you're a power user like I am you'll know why.

I just scan ALL downloads at Virus Total, use the now free Sandboxie for all my browsers, don't parse HTML or images in email, and create periodic full disk clones should disaster strike which has NEVER happened. I do use a plethora of scanners though, many of which many never heard of or even use. No, I'm not in the mood to talk about it all. But do as you wish if anti-virus software gives you that warm fuzzy felling. LOL

Hey F22SimPilot, I posted in your cyberpcforum. I have to disagree about most folks not needing AV, and most if not all AVs use both definitions and heuristics.

I'm with RolandJS on this. This is your usual highly irresponsible nonsense. it is one thing for an advanced user not to have an AV (although i would still advise everyone to have one). It is a completely different matter to be advising someone who clearly does not fall into this category, which robls99 clearly doesn't (no offence rob), to do the same.

ps - And Malwarebytes is no longer the stellar product it once was and has pretty poor detection rates aswell as being resource heavy.

Really? Before you go on and accuse someone of 'irresponsible nonsense', why don't you refute my opinions with at least five paragraphs citing your sources. Let me quote my post again for transparency.

Now lets break it down sentence by sentence.

I posted a link about how MSE is just a baseline scanner. You think I'm 'irresponsible' with that submission how?

I said that I felt like anti-virus software was a waste of time sense anti-virus software is definition based and that polymorphic malware will still slip by. I also stated that anti-virus today was loaded with fluff that you don't even need and can mess around with things on your computer.

I mentioned that you should scan ALL downloads at Virus Total. This is 'irresponsible?' No, it's good computing sense. Virus Total uses some 60 anti-virus engines so that if the download you have there, and depending on what it might be or is laced with polymorphic code, chances are it may be detected. The rule of thumb here is that four hits and you toss the download. I'd press and hold shift and delete the download. If your download is a game hack or something, due to its nature it will be all over the radar at Virus Total or your anti-virus solution. So you have to use good sound judgment on those.

Virus Total also gets signatures from the U.S. Cyber Command.

I said I used Sandboxie. This may help mitigate malware-laced Ads, images, JS and what not that may be infected from touching your computer. It'll also give you a little privacy as well. I'm 'irresponsible?'

I said I don't parse HTML or images in email. It should be a no brainer that malware can be delivered via HTML and images CAN be laced with a malware payload. I'm 'irresponsible?'

Before you quote someone on the Internet, it is vital to first THINK before typing. You are taking one sentence out of the whole paragraph and dismissing the whole message.

You may not have anything else going on in your life but most of the rest of us have. One person's endless, tedious (why use one word when you can use ten), repetitive dissertations are more than enough for any forum without me doing likewise, except to say what you advocate is not for the typical user who has neither the time nor the proficiency to do the same, hence it is highly irresponsible to suggest it to such people.

You can use the VirusTotal uploader. Adds an option to the "Send To" menu. Right click any file and "Send To VirusTotal".
The original app is no longer supported by VirusTotal and they recommend this one:
P.S. VirusTotal wont allow uploads over 20MB.
