I'm writing this thread on behalf of my grandad who has recently acquired a Windows 7 laptop, a Compaq NC6320, which had previously run Windows XP and has been upgraded to Windows 7, everything is fine apart from it won't perform windows update and I get the below error message. Can anyone help?

BJC1992:

The HP Compaq nc6320 Notebook PC is a very old model which was designed for Windows 2000 and XP and Vista.

Which version(Starter, Home Premium, Professional, Ultimate) and bit number(32, 64) of Windows 7 is installed in it?

Is Service Pack 1(SP1) included?

Windows Update has stopped working out of the box under any circumstance. They broke selfupdate of the Windows Update Client in January.

Windows Update in Windows 7 SP1 is not broken.
It should keep working until after ESU updates are no longer available after January 2023.

I don't have daily access to the laptop, so I'll look at the above points and write back on this thread at a later date, probably next week and can post the relevant information, so which version of Windows is installed etc.
And as Windows 7 no longer receives new security updates I only need this to work to the point where all existing updates are downloaded and everything would then be as up to date as it can be. Thanks to all that's offered advice so far.

1. Do a clean install of whatever version and bit number of Windows 7 SP1 you plan to use.

2. Obtain and run Simplix UpdatePack7R2 21.4.15

3. Install the necessary drivers (chipset, graphics, audio, ethernet, wireless, etc.).

4. Make whatever setting changes and personalization changes you deem necessary.

After you're all done, Windows 7 SP1 will be up-to-date to April 2021.

OK that's great, that's the sort of thing I was hoping to find. I'll be able to get on with that within the next few days so I'll mark the thread as solved. I'll post on here again if I do encounter any problems.

I just used the same steps in post #8 to re-do a Dell OptiPlex 780 for a friend.
The entire process (which included installing several apps afterwards) took about 6 hours.

Six hours? It usually takes me 30-45 mins depending on the machine. Though I have already updated the installation media beforehand which takes perhaps 45 mins if it is created on an sdd. It helps if you have downloaded any 3rd party program installers you want beforehand.

Update your Win 7 installation media

It takes me about 6 hours to do EVERYTHING.
1. Do a clean install of Windows 7 SP1
2. Run Simplix UpdatePack7R2 21.4.15
3. Install all necessary drivers
4. Make personalization changes and setting changes and tweaks
5. Install all necessary and desired third-party apps
(All drivers and third-party apps are already available)

If you update the installation media first - including drivers, ( takes approx 45 mins on an ssd ), then installing the updated media takes perhaps 20 mins. After that just install the programs and whatever tweaks, folder options, uac, and maybe a reg file to add context menus or whatever.

Even adding the time for downloading program installers and drivers, I dont know how it takes anywhere near 6hrs
