Hi all,

I have a friend who asked me to upgrade their Win7 desktop from Win7Pro to Win10 Pro.

I'm using a Win10 USB created with the Media Creation Tool. Basically, everything goes fine until it gets to that 'blue screen with white text' screen where it shows the percentage at the top-left as it installs Win10. I am not sure at what percentage things go awry, but suddenly the screen just goes black and the computer restarts and takes forever to reboot back into Windows 7 where I get a 'Windows has recovered from an unexpected shutdown' error.

I tried running 'sfc /scannow' and that says there is nothing wrong.

I also ran a 'DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /ScanHealth' command in an Administrator Command Line and the logs say it found 108 errors and fixed 106 of them. The two errors it couldn't fix were with AVG antivirus, which is working fine, but that shouldn't affect a Windows upgrade...?

After all that I tried the Win10 upgrade again and STILL get the same problem.

I do have the logs from the unexpected shutdown....is there somebody that knows how to read them that could look at them and tell me what is going wrong so I can try and get this upgrade to go through correctly? (zipped logs attached)

Thanks so much for any help! :)

Because of various issues and accumulated clutter that a computer may have, an "upgrade" install from Windows 7 to Windows 10 will fail about 40% of the time.
You will have better success with doing a "clean" install of Windows 10 and getting a fresh start.

Yeah, that's what the folks on the TenForums told me as well....but I've done this MANY times and have rarely had issues. Also, in his case, I can't do it because this install contains software he has no way to get back and a fresh install of Win10 would remove that.

Long story short, I actually solved it as it turned out his install of AVG Antivirus was what was causing the upgrade install to fail. I uninstalled that, re-did the upgrade and it went through fine, so he's now got Win10 on his desktop and all is well :)

Thanks though!

I meant to tell you earlier that having an antivirus app installed and running can cause the upgrade to fail.
I'm glad to hear you discovered that on your own.

I'm using a Win10 USB created with the Media Creation Tool.
If you used the media creation tool to do this as early as January 14 last year, you might not have trouble upgrading. Because before January 14, 2020, Microsoft will support free upgrades from Windows 7 to Windows 10.

It's still free to do? I've done the same upgrade on other computers using a similar process at least 7 other times this year so far. :)
