Can you disable Chrome's new "This Computer is Using Windows 7" bar?

So, last Chrome update apparently came in bundled with some kind of warning bar that pops up every time you launch Chrome saying "To get future Google Chrome Updates, you'll need to update to Win10. Your Computer is using Win7.". Is there any way to get rid of that? I remember there was once such a bar in WinXP/Vista with the same function, but I don't remember how I disabled it.

Hi

not sure if this tip for XP/Vista that you remembered...
Welcome

Yeah, that was the one... sadly, it doesn't work for this one. Just tried it.

Wonder what else I can do.

Get rid of chrome.
I'd love to, but sadly I haven't found any good alternatives. Firefox insists in having my historial in full display in a menu, and no way in hell I am ever touching IE. Hilariously, the new Chromium-based Edge is one of the few features I genuinely like of Win10/11.

I received the same pop up saying they are no longer supporting W7. Anyone know of a good alternative browser?

This is my "Chrome" browser. I use multiple browsers. That version I leave plain vanilla without any extensions.

Having said that. Try that and see if the BS message disappears. Note you'll have to manually update -- Oh no! What's that? Be sure to back up your bookmarks. If you are stuck in the Chrome/Google ecosphere, Ungoogled Chrome may not be for you...

I've got a bit more time to look at this now; what are the risks from having a non updated browser? Would your AV protect you?

I've had a look at Brave, which I may download and try but it seems pointless if all browsers are going to withdraw their support for W7 as I've read in some articles.

Will AV protect you? No, and no.

AV NEVER "protects" you and a browser CVE (Common Vulnerabilities and Exposures) will own (pwn) you regardless of what anti-virus you're running.

To be concise, anti-virus software now-a-days has been nothing short of a joke with overzealous and unnecessary fudge bloat. Not to mention the product DOES intercept your browser traffic and probably sends that back to AV headquarters. It has to in order to see if traffic over a TLS/"SSL" encrypted connections is laced with malware or not. Your anti-virus is in fact a man in the middle. Then anti-virus software is mostly definition based anyway. It WILL NOT stop a zero day.

This is why I use Sandboxie classic for my browser along with uBlock Origin to help mitigate malvertising and virus laced domains.

There's a program in Kali Linux that will own your browser. The hack is called session hijacking. Your AV will not stop that. That's just one browser vulnerability. Another is if the browser is not patched to mitigate a certain malicious JS code or what ever. Again, AV won't protect you. As it is JS expletive can do some cool (IMO) stuff...

I have the same message about no further updates in Brave as well. At the moment Vivaldi (which could be a Chrome variant) still updates for me, as does Firefox. I am currently looking for a couple more to have installed and ready for all eventualities.

FWIW I need to keep a Chrome-based browser on my W7 PC for a specific website, and it appears that not only Brave but also ungoogled-Chromium give the warning bar at top when launched.

I think I will go-back to using Firefox day-to-day, and relegate Brave to a backup role i.e. for that site that I need it for, which frankly I don't even look at every month.

Good post torchwood, I found in the Comments of that thread the following regedit, which worked for me to eliminate the annoying info bar in Brave:

Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Policies\BraveSoftware\Brave]
"SuppressUnsupportedOSWarning"=dword:00000001

The only solution I found was to ditch Chrome for Comodo Dragon. I haven't gotten Advanced Chrome or Ungoogled Chromium to install yet...a task for the next housecall from the computer tech. I tried two solutions that both failed:
1. Run
type 'msconfig'
enter
services
uncheck 'hide all microsoft services'
uncheck both google updates (gupdate & gupdatem)
apply
ok
restart computer

2.run
type 'services.msc'
ok
system and security
go to administrative tools
doubleclick services
doubleclick each gupdate & gupdatem
under 'general tab' choose disabled
click ok
restart

The next day, my freshly installed Chrome 107.0.5304 was 'upgraded' to the current version for Win 7, with the nag screen....every time. So the above methods don't work. I did not try the registry edit method as I consider that out of my league.

Just a moment...

Until my recent move to Win 7, I had been using XP Pro for at least five years...the OS every security freak swore on a stack of programming bibles was soooo vulnerable, and always ever ready to quote cvedetails to 'prove' his point. Lost count of how many frantic ipse dixits I got promising impending doom. Same deal for the only browsers that would run on XP. Yeah, never happened. Worse I ever got was a couple PUPs downloading from MajorGeeks or Softpedia. My theory is that if you have a good router with NAT & SPI hardware firewall properly set up by a pro, and any sort of software firewall (mine was the Agnitum Outpost Firewall 2009), you are pretty much bulletproof. FYI, I got rid of the AV early on, unless you count Malwarebytes Free and Superantispyware Free as AV. Needless to say, I view most of this EOL/EOS obsession much akin to the Y2K hysteria.

Will Win 7 and its browsers prove to be as invulnerable as XP Pro did? Time will tell, and the proof is in the pudding, but I'd bet yes, and I'm not a big gambler. I'd say focus more on your firstline defense (hardware/software firewalls), and less on the rest. As for browsers, I've now settled on Comodo Dragon, Comodo IceDragon, and Epic Privacy Browser. I had Ungoogled Chromium, but couldn't figure out how to get uBlock Origin on it, and without that the advert deluge is endless, so had to get rid of it. When the tech guy does the next housecall, I'll see about trying out Advanced Chrome.

What the heck! That page doesn't even render in Pale Moon! :p LOL

I find it so mind blowing that in order to change how a browser functions today one needs to hack the crap out of your computer. Namely the registry. Firefox is like that just to stop mandated updates. Ridiculous doesn't fit the definition here. How about something more creative like, "snake sandwich full of maggots?" Disgusting? That's the intent...

Nice find though. I'll file that away for when I update this Ungoogled Chromium since it's been reported that turd message shows up in the latest version.

Yes, I found that out too plus a few others browsers I looked at.

I happened to be on a call with my works IT department yesterday and asked them whether Chrome not being updated presented any security risks and they said no, as long as you have AV. I download a lot of videos from Youtube onto my computer and my AV always says 'scanning your download to be safe' and probably about one in six videos gets 'removed' as it has a virus.

Firefox fully supports Windows 7 currently, so you can download any version (the newest at the time of writing are v109 and v102.7ESR and they could be updated automatically).
In case of Chromium based browsers, you should download any version with engine v109 or earlier.
Palemoon does not plan to stop support Windows 7.
