Windows can't remember icon positions (or is it Resolution?) upon wake

My Dell Latitude E6540 laptop is used in three modes, undocked with onboard 1920x1080 res, Docked with a 2560x1440 res external monitor, and then as now Docked to a 30" 2560x1600 monitor. When the PC has been asleep/standby overnight, in the morning when I awaken it, the icons briefly appear in what looks to be the 1920x1080 frame size, but then move to the h1440 position i.e. not to the bottom of my 1600 tall screen. I can use a Desktop Restore utility to position them properly again, but it's frustrating to have to do this every day.

What seems to be happening is that the laptop forgets it is supposed to restore to the last-used 2560x1600 positions, and instead thinks it's connected to my 2560x1440 monitor, which is on a different dock at another house.

Can anyone suggest what might be happening and how to fix this? My laptop has both Intel HD 4600 and AMD Radeon HD 8790M graphics chipsets built-in fwiw. It seems to me that prior to W7, XP used to have "hardware profiles" but I don't know how Windows 7 deals with my 3 different usage scenarios, except that it does so automatically.

Hi Max,

god i hate dual graphics....
Your system will allways default to the Intel driver, (its the default and unfortunatly the "inferior" of the 2)
Not sure if you have changed anything lately, if so that might affect your system

Your easiest get-out option is to set up that Desktop restore utility option as a scheduled task...
set to run when your comp returns from sleep/hibernation using the Event ID as the trigger
(not using 7 anymore so cant give you it)

i use Brinks clear events .bat file... so run that then put your comp to sleep and then resume, look for event in sytem log

Hi torchwood, thanks for hanging-around here despite "not using 7 anymore". I was hoping someone smart would see this, and you certainly qualify! Yeah my ATI graphics chip can be specified to be used "per application" and I suspect somehow it is interfering. Maybe I will scour that thing for a setting that may be responsible for this mess.

But the Scheduled Task idea is a good one too assuming I can find a good trigger event. What is odd about this situ is that I can Sleep the Dell during the day, and even Restart it for whatever reason, and the desktop may restore properly. But 99.9% of the time it is overnight that is needed ie. I open the PC in the a.m. and the icons think I've a smaller display attached.

god i hate dual graphics....

You said a mouthful there torchwood! I tried a few days ago to reinstall my graphics drivers, because in looking at their notes Dell said "install the Intel driver before you install the AMD driver" and I wasn't sure I'd done that. So I first re-asserted the Dell Intel 4x00 but when I tried to uninstall to re-install the Catalyst it failed with a blue screen. Many long minutes and "oh craps" later when I couldn't get the driver to update, I noticed also that the install was corrupted i.e. I couldn't get the Catalyst Control Center to load. Tried a couple of System Restores but that didn't fix it. I finally had to recover my entire PC from an Acronis image backup (made every morning thank goodness) and I got back to where I started. Several hours down the tube.

I don't think I'll try to fix this problem any more. In fact, now I am at our summer house where I have a 2650x1440 display instead of 2650x1600, and the desktop icons are in there proper place on startup.

You know, the supposed joy of the AMD/CCC graphics chip is to augment the Intel, and it works in that one program I have, a home design program which has a 3d walk-about feature, only works smoothly with the AMD chip assigned to it. Other than that I'd never even have thought to use it I think.

yep>> rule is remove secondary driver and ALL associated "add-ons"..REBOOT .. update integrated graphics then install secondary(better) card drivers...

I actually found and DL'ed and tried DDU and it hadn't helped--at least, afterward is when I determined to try Sys Restore (which didn't work in the end).

Along the way I found that AMD's CCC had installed a "filter" to my system, which reminded me of similar problems with Acronis. Dem filters can be troublesome.

At this point I have to leave everything alone and hope for a summer of No Problems. Maybe in the fall when I return to the 2650x1600 display I will try this all over again, starting perhaps with DDU to (try to) uninstall AMD's stuff.
