I have a Vaio All in One VCG-LT15E that I just upgraded to Win 7 Pro x64 from Vista x32 using the student website. I also have the Geforce 8400M GT and had issues for a while. None of the NVIDIA website drivers will work ... ended up using the driver and modified .inf from:

http://forums.laptopvideo2go.com/topic/24926-v19062-windows-7vista-64bit-nvidia/

I know it's a 190 series and not the "mobile" 180 series but after many tries....it worked like a charm. Just make sure you copy and replace the modified .inf ..... that's the secret to get around Sony's lack of Windows 7 support for existing models.

Now...I have the same issues with you as far as my Mass Media Controller (Smart Card Reader)....still working on that one.

I'm also not too happy about the drivers I'm using for my VCCG-6 Webcam...wish I could find a better one.

Good Luck!

I ran the Upgrade Advisor for my Sony VGC-LT15E and it found a couple of compatibility issues for the W7 upgrade - as follows:

NVIDIA GeForce 8400M GT
NVIDIA

Not compatible
The driver installed for this device is not compatible with Windows 7.

Sony Lucid Integrated Mpeg encoder
Sony Corporation

Not compatible
The driver installed for this device is not compatible with Windows 7.

What would I need to do make my PC ready for a W7 upgrade?

Thanx .... Dan

Click this link:

v187.62 Windows 7/Vista 32bit | Clevo - NVISION

click 'Download Drivers" (in red). Save it to your desktop, double click the icon. Then it extracts. Once it has extracted, go back to that site and click "INF modified". Download that to your desktop and then drag it into the folder. It will ask you if you want to replace/over-write existing file, say yes.

Then run the setup.exe inside the folder, let it install and you're all sorted.

Many Thanks, rapt0r !!!
Had the same problem, that no driver for my Nvidia 8400M GT was working properly, so when playing blue ray videos i had a voice without a picture! Strange!

But finally your link, combined with the modified .inf allows me to watch my blue rays when running Windows 7!

THX again and best wishes from Germany

I have a VGN-FZ470E and when I ran the upgrad advisor, I got the same notification as many of you about the NVIDIA GeForce 8400M GT. I found this thread first but still decided to see what Sony could do although someone said they were worthless...well they were. Here is my conversation:

Morgan_>
Hi Muneeb. Welcome to Sony Online Support. I’m Morgan. Please allow me a moment to review your concern.

Muneeb>
Sure...

Morgan_>
Thanks for waiting, Muneeb. I’ll be happy to assist you with the information regarding the compatibility of the Computer with the Windows 7.

Muneeb>
It says the NVIDIA device driver is not compatible, if I proceed to upgrade to windows 7, will I lose the ability to play blu ray dvd's?

Muneeb>
What drivers do I need to install?

Morgan_>
Muneeb, I have checked the compatibility of the Computer with the Windows 7 Operating System.

Morgan_>
As per the information available online, the Computer supports only the Windows Vista Home Premium Operating System in the Computer.

Muneeb>
Why doesn't it support windows 7?

Muneeb>
What will happen if I upgrade?

Morgan_>
The Computer is designed to work with the Vista preinstalled in the Computer.

Morgan_>
If you install the Windows 7 in the Computer, many of the Hardware components will not work normally.

Morgan_>
The Video Card, Wirless Network, audio, etc will not work normally after upgrading to the Windows 7.

Muneeb>
When will Sony create the proper drivers so I can run windows 7?

Morgan_>
Muneeb, please bookmark Sony Support Site and check back for the Drivers in the future.

Muneeb>
Can you tell me if there will be a solution soon?

Muneeb>
It seems pretty silly to not have compatible drivers...

Muneeb>
If I had known this, I would not have purchased this laptop

Morgan_>
Muneeb, I'm sorry that currently Sony does not support the Windows 7 in the Computer.

Will I truely lose the functionality of the things "Morgan" has stated above?

Do I need seperate drivers for the previous work-arounds? Has anyone seen any issues with their wireless capabilities?

I am definitely a novice at all of this, so any help would be appreciated. Thank you.

Don't Risk It!

If I were you, and btw - I am in the same sinking boat because of Sony - I would dump my current PC and go snag a W7 compliant/pre-loaded PC and be done with it. Never again will I support Sony. Their attitude towards my problem was basically, "tough crap!" Just "wait and see!" Well sorry Sony - you do very much S&&K and I'm not waiting around for you to get your S&&T together!

I thought Sony would be better than this. Man was I WRONG!

Hi all,

I've got a Sony Vaio AR41L, running Vista 32-bit and when I run the Windows 7 Upgrade Advisor, it also gives me the message about the nVidia GeForce 8400M GT driver not being compatible with Windows 7.

I've trawled the forums and various people seem to be suggesting different things and my question relates to the timing of the upgrade - I'm not totally hardware/upgrade savvy so any advice would be appreciated.

This is what I've done so far:

1. Backed up my Hard-drive onto an external hard-drive.
2. Tomorrow I'm going out to buy a few blank dvds/cds to make a disc image.

I'd like to do a new install of Windows 7 Home Premium or Ultimate instead of upgrading from Vista... I purchased the laptop 2 years ago, so it doesn't qualify for the 'free' upgrade.

I'm wondering, at what point do I install the 'new' drivers for the graphics card? Will I be able to see anything at all if it says it's not compatible? In other words, what is the problem that is experienced by people who have upgraded to Windows 7 without loading new drivers or whatever for this graphics card?

Hi NickG
When you install Windows 7 as a fresh install you will still get a reasonable screen picture as the computer loads a standard vga driver. But then you will want to update your graphics driver to get better graphics for games or such!

Here is how I did it-
How I installed the latest Nvidia M 186.81 notebook driver to my Sony Vaio VGN-AR51E laptop.
Sony is supposed to supply the drivers but they don't for some reason.
The latest laptop drivers from Nvidia work if you alter two lines of information in the appropriate inf file before executing.
I downloaded the latest driver from Nvidia (186.81) and ran it so it unpacked into a folder in my C drive. [Message box says it won't install].
From Control panel I got my driver hardware ID
Control panel / Device manager / Display adapters / Properties / Details / Device description/
PCI\VEN_10DE&DEV_0426&SUBSYS_9016104D&REV_A1
PCI\VEN_10DE&DEV_0426&SUBSYS_9016104D
PCI\VEN_10DE&DEV_0426&CC_030000
PCI\VEN_10DE&DEV_0426&CC_0300
(You just need the second line here)
Then I opened up the Nvidia driver package and altered NVDM.inf file, in the Display folder, by adding two lines to include my hardware ID
(as you scroll down the inf file and study, you will see where these go, in two different list sections)
%NVIDIA_DEV.0426.01% = Section005, PCI\VEN_10DE&DEV_0426&SUBSYS_9016104D
NVIDIA_DEV.0426.01 = "NVIDIA GeForce 8400M GT (Sony Vaio AR51E)"
I included my ID also in ListDevices.txt in the NVDM.inf section
and in modes.txt (but may be superfluous - I am no expert!)
Also I put the two lines in the NVAM.inf (but may be superfluous)
Don't forget to save all.
I deleted the old Nvidia driver rebooted and ran setup on the new Nvidia driver! It worked!! Hope this helps you. PYL

Or you could also try NVIDIA MobilityModder - DriverHeaven.net

If you are okay with the quality of the graphics then fine. But it wont even let you play solitaire!

Sorry, im a n00b to computer tech stuff. Are you saying that the computer will not display a high resolution or I will lose the functionality of the blu-ray player in my laptop?

What kind of graphics are you encountering?

Standard VGA

Well, I don't have blu-ray but my TV episodes (AVI files) still played okay with the standard VGA graphics. You can't get all the usual resolutions though. You can't get Hardware Acceleration to run, so games are no good - even solitaire! I definitely would never settle for cut down graphics - what a waste! Sony could so easily rectify all this!

Christian

Mass Storage controller- Nvidia 8400M-GT, and Touchpad

Hello all -

Just did a clean install of Windows 7 premium on my Sony VGN-FZ21E.
Suffered the following problems afterward - but managed to fix all but one of them... Perhaps I've just been lucky, but might work for others.

1/. Wouldn't recognise the Nvidia 8400M-GT - showed up as a generic VGA adapter in device manager...
2/. Partial loss of of touchpad function -no scroll faility etc - showed up as a generic PS2 mouse in device manager...
3/. No drivers at all installed for the Mass Storage Controller - (card reader..)
4/. Device managetr showed the display screen as being a generic PnP monitor.

I had backed up the machine before the clean install, and I'd also created some discs using the Windows Transfer wizard - none of these however would fix the above problems. My recovery discs also proved useless.

Went to Sony website - logged in my machine serial number and went to the download section. Clicked on the originally installed tab and dowloaded the original drivers package direct into the temp folder on the C drive (all 113 Mb of it...)
Went into device manager and told it to search for new drivers on the C Drive - three minutes later the 8400M the mass sotrage controller and the touchpad were all up and running.
After that, visited the Nvidia website and downloaded the full application pack for the 8400M GT and now all singing and dancing ...
The only minor niggle I still have is that device manager still shows the display as being a generic PnP display. Not really a problem though as doesn't seem to have affected image quality now that the 8400 is fully functioning.

This worked!!!

186.91 WHQL at Microsoft Update (all desktop + notebook cards) - Guru3D.com Forums

I have a Sony Vaio VGC LT19U on which I did a clean install of W7 64 bit, but had the nVidia driver problem with the nVidia GeForce 8400M GT. I have looked high and low. Tried several modified nVidia drivers from laptops2go.com. Tried modifying inf files myself, used the nVidia Mobiiity Modder Tool. All allowed the display to work properly but I COULD NOT PLAY BLU-RAY disks! This worked! The Cyberlink PowerDVD still has a red mark next to the newly installed driver but it works so I don't care. I am having some issues burning DVDs in some video creation software (Ulead VideoStudio X2) but not sure yet whether that is problem with driver or the poorly documented and explained software package...
