Hi,

I read about some people complaining that the download wasn't bootable, I just ordered the upgrade, aswell as a disk. my question is the following; is the disk itself bootable ? or does it have to be started from windows ??

Thanks

Student promo

I purchased the Win7 Pro 64-bit student upgrade from DigitalRiver, plus the mailed-to-you DVD. The initial download they linked me to would not unpack properly on my WinXP Pro 32-bit system. It kept getting errors very near the end. After spending a lot of time with their tech support, I got a link to an ISO which you can burn with the Win7 USB/DVD tool, and it worked fine after that.

To answer your main question, when you burn it the 'upgrade' DVD is bootable and capable of a full install. If you try to run the DVD in XP-32, it gets an error message and instructs you to reboot. When you do reboot, Win7 setup formats the drive and carries out the install.

A sidebar of trivia for you :) I, too, had those errors at the end of the unpack and made the assumption that the error message was erroneous and perhaps related to the process' attempt to launch the x64 installer under Win XP x86 - With the confirmation of others who had successfully run the process I discovered the contents did unpacked fully.

Using ImgBurn I created a bootable, working install disc out of that download and the install was painless and error-free.

edit: OP, according to many on Slickdeals.net, the disc is bootable.

Im having the exact same problem, it will not unpack the install files without getting an error related to write or read only permissions when "Unloading the Box"
Win XP 32bit -> Win 7 64bit.

I saw that they gave you a link for a iso that is USB bootable. How do I contact them to get that?

Thanks.

PS I am in China so a 1800 number or something would be helpful.

So your saying you got the same error but the files still worked after you made an iso with them?

Yes, correct. I received the same error and after some back and forth discussion with others who received it and those who didn't, we all concluded that the error was not related to the unpacking but rather the attempt to run the SETUP.exe after the image was unpacked.

Thus, I moved forward and used IMGBurn to create the DVD out of the download. It worked as expected.

If you have a 32 bit OS, and download the 64 bit, you need to either buy the disk kit as well, or burn the files you downloaded to an ISO.
If you downloaded the 32bit version, there will be no problem whatsoever running the installer.

On a side note, I have a question about the ultimate steal student discount. It says that you have to verify that you are taking at least 0.5 credits upon request. Does that mean that it is guaranteed that they will request verification or just that if they do you have to verify it? I ask because I currently don't have access to my transcript.

The Student Ultimate Steal refers to buying Office Ultimate, not Windows 7.

On that note, it should still be available for students with an @edu email address.
