CPU? What would you reccomend?

Hey everybody,

I am looking for a new CPU. what would you recomend for me? (My CPU information is below).

Current CPU: AMD Duron 'Applebread'
Socket Type: A (Sadley)

Any reccomendations on a good upgrade that is really fast?

It depends on whether you plan to keep that motherboard. I don't think you'll get 'really fast' or even a 'fast' CPU upgrade with that board unfortunately.

Before we can make any sure recommendation of what CPU to upgrade to, you'll need to get the exact motherboard model. Normally, when you open up the case, you can see the model number printed on the motherboard. From here, we can check it against the motherboard's manufacturer site and see the compatible CPUs it supports.

In any upgrades, if you're looking at the short term, the fastest way to get performance boosts out of any system is to increase RAM as the primary upgrade route. Increasing it to 1-2GB will significantly improve responsiveness and overall performance.

For the long term, I'd suggest to look at upgrading both the CPU, motherboard and RAM for overall improvement.

I have a lot of different computers, but I like the AMD CPUs the best. Just my preference & 26 years experience.

AMD Phenom II X4 940 Black Edition Quad , or Intel's Core i7 920 Quad-Core, but depends on your budget and what do you do?
Game, video processing, or watching HD videos...and remember these CPU's require different mobos...Core i7 is based on socket 1366, AMD is AM2+

Well, I was thinking of something that can multitask really well, and is really fast. I want to use Windows Media Center, movies, TV Tuner, games, and stuff like that.I'll reasearch the motherboard model later, but the CPU socket is SOCKET A.

It is too old to be worthwhile upgrading, imo . I have 2 much better Socket A processors sitting in a drawer (XP3200 and XP2500) : (
Finding a decent motherboard for them is difficult these days and AGP video cards are very poor value compared to the modern PCIe ones.

Probably best you save some dollars and buy some new parts or a more modern secondhand machine .

Personally,I can't see the point even to do a bencmarking.As I can read,and if I did untersood well from his posts,he is planning to buy some very fast CPU so he can do a multitasking.With that socket A motherboard(whatever model it is,doesn't matter at all),he simply can't do multitasking without burning his CPU.
So,my advice would be to get rid of that socket A MBO,and even if you are limited with money,you can find at really really good price some AM2 motherboard,and x2 CPU,what is I believe,really minimum of the minimum to do some video editing,picture processing or whatever you are planning to do.
