NOT connected to Internet: How to get drivers onto it?

So I finally got my Windows 7 OEM 32-bit Home premium to work and load. The motherboard has a fabulous ethernet port (10/100/1000), but no wireless capability, and my home network is all Wi-Fi (it's setup in my housemate's room, so I can't just run a cable to the router).

So I have a USB flash drive. So far most all my devices do not have any Windows7 support yet. I was hoping to connect and activate Windows7 via getting it on the net and download any updates or patches that may already be out, plus search for the updated drivers directly from that machine.

I am on my laptop which is running Vista. I am trying to turn Internet Sharing ON but it keeps saying the services were not running to allow ICS (Internet sharing). I don't know which services to turn on, because I open the services list and see ICS listed and it's not on but if I press START it says cannot start service due to other services not started, or something along those lines. I would use a cross-over cable to connect the two, correct or not?

I am looking for drivers for my:
  • new Wi-Fi adapter: Airlink101 Wireless N USB Adapter model no. AWLL6077
  • new motherboard drivers: ASUS M3A78-EM (I already flashed the BIOS so I am up to date on that), all drivers, Realtek HD audio drivers, onboard ATI Radeon drivers
  • new optical drive: LG Super Multi Drive GH22/GH24 series
  • new monitor: HANNspree HDMI/VGA 20" (wouldn't load on Vista anyway)
  • my mp3 player: SONY Walkman NWZ-S639F 16 GB
  • new pen tablet: WACOM BAMBOO FUN series, small, model EC-155-05
  • my external harddrive: 1TB Western Digital My Book Essential USB connect
It seems like I can't do any of that without the Internet, or else I find it on this laptop and put in on the flash drive and run it on the desktop... that is, if these drivers exist. Has anyone else had trouble finding drivers for their hardware? This is why I was talked out of getting the 64-bit version of Windows 7, because the salesguy on the phone said that there wouldn't be any 64-bit support for my current hardware most likely, and that it would be a long time before they would come along...

What do you think? Or do you know where to find these? I've already checked AirLink101's website and their only drivers for download are for Vista. So already I feel that I got the wrong Wi-Fi device, and I can't return it, so I just ate $40 because of Windows7.
:(

You can use a crossover cable to connect or get a Wireless USB stick that uses the same frequency - a, b, g, n,. 64-bit would have been better. Good a time as any to update your hardware to 64-bit supported hardware.

I tried the crossover cable, but I couldn't get them to see each other or link right. It just made me cut off my Internet connection somehow. I don;t know what I'm doing wrong... Can you think of anything???

You need an RJ-45 Cat 5e ethernet cable. That should work at the slowest speed of the two computers. Connect to the ethernet slot at the PC's, then reboot and try again. Try the wireless suggestion also.

Does your laptop have a NIC card on it?? If so try to just bridge the connections instead of sharing them... (This might work I personally have never tried this before)

You have to select both your LAN and Wireless card then right click and click bridge connections.. you can also delete the bridge later if it does not work..

Hope this Helps..

I do have an RJ-45 CAT5 crossover cable, which I paid too much for from Best Buy. My laptop has an Ethernet port and a Wireless adapter built inside. But my new desktop only has an Ethernet port, which is why I bought the Airlink101 N wireless USB adapter. However, they don't offer Windows 7 drivers or support for this $40 wireless adapter, and they don't take them back! So I have to work with what I have.

My laptop runs Vista, and I have been trying to turn Internet Connection Sharing (ICS) ON, but it says the services required are not running, so when I open services and go to ICS and try to click START it says that the required support services for this service are not running! What all needs to be turned on to allow ICS to work on Vista?

Then if I plug my crossover cable b/w my Vista laptop and Windows 7 desktop, should I create an ad-hoc network? Or really just having Internet sharing on would work I would think.

Is it possible at this time to download any Windows 7 updates? I could download to a USB flash drive and then put them onto the desktop, but I really want to get the desktop on the Internet, and the only way is via Airlink101's drivers being for Windows 7 OR I connect via a crossover cable through my Vista laptop that had 2 built-in network adapaters: for the RJ-45 and the wireless that is connected to the Internet. I can only connect to the Internet via wireless, which is why I bought this adapter for the desktop! I guess I was expecting there to be more Windows 7 driver hardware support than there seems to be...

Which is WHY I didn't go 64-bit. All my hardware supports 64-bit in my new desktop, so I called the vendor to switch my 32-bit order to 64-bit over the phone, and he talked me into sticking with 32-bit (the OEM versions don't have both versions on them like the upgrades do, which I wish I had gotten instead now that I realize that) because he said that hardware these days other than graphics rarely takes full advantage of 64-bit computing. He said it would be hard to fine 64-bit Windows 7 drivers for all my hardware; shoot, I am having trouble finding just 32-bit drivers!

Maybe I can upgrade in the future? Do you think that is possible to upgrade from 32 to 64-bit Windows 7 without wiping your hard drive out and srarting over?

I guess really I should try to get the Internet sharing turned on so I can get this device on the Internet via crossover cable to Vista with Wi-Fi.

Sounds like a plan? So if anyone knows more about Vista ICS... that would help, unless anyone knows a one-stop Windows7 drivers website or download package...

Thanks

I got a new network adapter by exchanging this one for another model (same brand) after calling tech support and learning that there is no Windows7 driver support for the wireless adapter model I had bought. So I now have one that is supposed to be compatible, and even has a Windows 7 installation section, so let's hope so!

I also have a router here. What would happen if my Vista laptop that has 2 NICs (one for LAN and one Wi-Fi), and the Wi-Fi is connected to a wireless router in another room. Could I use the Ethernet port to connect to a router, and then plug other computers into that router to share the Internet if I can't get ICS turned on in Vista on my laptop to get my Windows 7 desktop online too?

I keep getting an error trying to turn ICS on in Vista, saying Windows could not start ICS because:
Error 1068: The dependency service or group failed to start

What does that mean? I thought I had all the dependency services needed on...

Otherwise, I am finding Windows 7 drivers for most of my hardware now. I got the ASUS ones, the WD My Book Essentials USB external 1tb drive latest firmware and software which is guaranteed Windows 7 compatible. I got the latest Wacom Bamboo Fun pen tablet drivers. What's left? I downloaded the latest Airlink wireless adapater drivers just in case...

I almost am ready to switch completely... and when I do, I'll put my laptop away! (It's dying anyway)

If you want to have 4+ gigs of RAM, you will need to go 64 bit. If you have less than that, stick with 32. Performance differences are negligible, and you should have no trouble at all finding 64 bit drivers.
