networking itself is relatively easy. You set up a wireless ad-hoc network and go from there.

ON MAIN COMPUTER CONNECTED TO INTERNET
Open network and sharing center
click "change adapter settings"

right click your LAN(not the wireless)
choose properties
click Sharing tab, Share it
*you can turn off allow other network users to control or disable shared internet connection if you like*

right click your wireless
choose properties
double click the TCP/IPv4
Set the wireless to 192.168.1.1 (or anything else you want like it)

move to Prefered DNS Server
press Start button
Run "CMD"
type IPCONFIG /ALL
press enter
find the DNS for your LAN
enter both of those into the Prefered and alternat DNS server for your wireless.

Close the consol window
click "OK" on the TCP/IPv4 window.

click OK to the Wireless network properties.

Click "Back" to get out of adapter settings

click "Manage Wireless Networks" in Network and sharing center

click Add

click Creat an ad-hoc network

click next

type a network name

choose your security

choose your security key

Don't bother to save it. Windows WILL NOT automatically serve it so you'll have to make it every time anyway.

click Next and ok to finish.

ON LAPTOP (or whatever other computer)
Open network and sharing center
Adapter settings
wireless properties
open TCP/IP v4 settings
Set your IP to 192.168.1.2 (or whatever the main computer is but with a different last number)

set your gateway to 192.168.1.1 (or whatever your main computer is)

set your DNS servers to what they were on the main(not sure if this is required but I do it)

your wireless should see the network.

click the network icon

join the network

type the security code. It should connect to it.

For sharing files, download a server program or use home groups, I prefer a 3d party server program such as NetworkActiv Webserver ( Home of NetworkActiv Web Server (NAWS) )

Install that on your main computer and connect to it from your other computer to share files. You could install it on the other computer too really.

I prefer to disable the useless windows firewall in favor of Comodo Firewall

^^^ That's definitely not how I would go about configuring a workgroup or homegroup.

i3mr - do you have all Windows 7 computers, or do you have Windows 7 and Vista/XP/Apple computers? Once you let us know, it will be very easy to help you configure a workgroup or homegroup. It will be much easier than the steps outlined above. You will not need to install any third party server applications to access shared files.

A network is just a connection between machine A and machine B. The lowest level of a network is file sharing. If you have a wireless router at home, just set up a secure wireless network, connect your machine onto this network and you got your networking. From there sharing files between the machine is like swallowing water.

Works great on this end with how I have it set up : )

I don't like DHCP so don't use it.

Also, I hate routers, nothing but trouble, so the Ad-Hoc works around that by not bothering with one.

Lots of ways to do it of course, this is my way.

tannim, installing a third party software for file sharing is not needed.

ON MAIN COMPUTER CONNECTED TO INTERNET"

You don't need a "main" computer. All computuer can be main computers if you set them up to connect to a wireless router . In this stone age, you want to to be connected to the net anywhere and at anytime with the LEAST amount of time. The only cabling i would think for the network is the cabling from modem to router. That's ONE cable. Or if you got Router and modem all in one, ONE cable from the street to it.

My way doesn't require a router. If you have a computer that is always on, you may as well use it as a server too. Which works very well for my house ; ) As to cabling my way to your way... exactly the same number of cables.

I did say you could do file sharing with home groups. I just prefer the thirdparty software for myself and it works for that use as well.

Routers are nothing but trouble? What exactly is wrong with a router? I've been doing networking for many years, and I have yet to have any difficulty with a router. QoS, on/off times for MAC addresses, IP reservations (totally eliminating the need for static IPs), port forwarding, a lot less power consumption than an always on PC, the ability to connect non-PC hardware to a network (blu-ray player, Roku player), etc etc etc. Plus, wired and wireless networking and no need to constantly re-create an ad-hoc network.

Just my two cents.

Tannin, attempting to explain your convoluted method of setting up a network to the OP was definately not in his best interest. I'm fairly certain that the Op is not interested in your fancy, overly complicated and completely outdated third party way of setting up a network in Windows 7.

I'm quite positive he was looking for the tried and true Windows 7 method of setting up a network in Windows 7. Or at least that is the advice you should be giving him here.

I'am also positive that the OP never asked for your opinion about the usefulness of Routers which only served to complicate your advise even further.

Sorry but your explanation and theory's on using routers is beyond archaic.

As you can see the OP had a difficult time following your method mostly because it was very convoluted and required a third party software which was completely unnecessary.

In the furture, lets try and stick to advice that includes tried and true Windows 7 approved methods of setting up a network. :)

I'll post alternative methods as I like. It works for me quite well. My 3rd party software was only for the filesharing aspect and I told him it could be done with home groups as well.

Routers might have gotten easier, but I still have to tell people to open or forward ports a lot.

My way may not be the "windows 7 way" but it works just fine.

Router does what it does and fundamentially have not changed. Where they differ is not how they are used but how they are setup. Usually this implies securitising your personal network so others cannot log on and use your connection. My take on routers is that it should be set to the level that is required for you. Don't complicate your setup if it's not necessary to do so.

With all things IPs and connections, it's easiest and best to allow for auto detection and leave things to default as much as you can. I feel your (tannim) woes with routers were due to over complications resulted in adverse effects, otherwise i fail to see why using a router would not work in your favour.

As for third party software, i would advise against using it, especially if all you need to do is to share files. Why put more stuff on your machine than necessary?

At the end of the day, it's your machine and setup, do as u wish...but like a couple have said, lets do things from w7 perspective and keep it simple. I'm sure your time in sharing your experience would be appreciated.
