Hasn't there been people wanting to change MAC address of their devices lately or what?

Quite possibly the most needless thing to do (and clueless as to why people want to do it) in IT that i have heard in my life.

There are legitimate reasons to change a MAC address so jumping to the conclusion that every request for help with this is for evil doings is inappropriate!!! Simply stating that it is against site policy was all that was needed! If a new poster forgets his password do you immediately accuse him hacking too? :( That said, there is NOTHING in the Forum Rules that specifically, or even in general terms, that prohibits such discussions!! The only thing even close is about intellectual property protection, which does not pertain to MAC addresses.

Stereotypical typecasting, then piling on with insults when there is absolutely no indication this was for evil deeds was neither necessary, appropriate, nor professional! I might point to Rule #2.

Even after being insulted, saadrakeeb came back with a "thanks". Who was the better person here?

Some ISPs (and corporate networks) bind their service to a specific MAC address. If the user changes their NIC or installs a router, the service may not work anymore. Since we all know how responsive some ISP tech support centers can be, changing the MAC address is simpler, and a legitimate solution.

Also, while all network devices are suppose to have unique MAC addresses, with nearly 1 billion Windows machines in the world today, plus countless routers, modems, print servers and other network devices, sometimes it happens; the same MAC address is burned into the firmware of two or more devices. The ONLY way around this to avoid conflicts is to change (yes, spoof) the address.

@saadrakeeb - I am sorry you were mistreated so rudely. Please understand the misguided responses were, I suspect, knee-jerk reactions and not personal, but biased reactions based on past experiences of bad guys coming to these forums seeking our help to do their evil deeds. Please see this SevenForums thread: MAC address spoofing.

"change the MAC address to get have afree internet service"

To me, that totally means "hacking" of some sort because of the word "free."

Is it absolutely, definitely hacking? Can't say for sure but I wasn't born the day before yesterday. NY will make a person wise beyond their years in no time flat.

I'm not here as a professional. I'm here as a normal user helping other users when I can. Nobody insulted the OP as far as I can see. As far as I'm concerned, no responses were misguided.

Perhaps if he had said a "legitimate free service" or something similar, he would have received my help. It's not within my needs to figure out why. It's my right not to help if I don't want to.

Notice he never refuted the hacking, directly, at all?

Alright - I missed that. My apologies for ME jumping the gun. :o

That said, especially overseas, there are many free services and this still could be a legitimate request. But I was wrong in my approach. Apologies again.

No doubt. :D I know about overseas and thought possibly the same myself. My first post where I asked if he wanted us to help him to hack - that was actually my way of testing him to see what he was going to say. lol

Since you can hack ISP directly and normal user's routers too by spoofing, I felt he was up to no good.

All is well!

No body insulted me. But you did create a little problem, and I made it worse by not asking for more information before responding.

You said you wanted to access "a free Internet service". I did not read that as you trying to do something bad as I know there are many cities (especially outside the United States) that provide free Internet service. But not everyone realizes that and with the language difficulty, your statement can be taken 2 ways, one good, one bad. The good way is there is a free service in your area and you wanted to access it - no problem. The bad is that you were trying to get access to a paid service without paying for it, and that's a problem. We have no way of knowing if you are authorized to access a free service, or if you are trying to "steal" the service by making your computer appear to be an authorized computer.

Sadly, some people come here asking for help to steal services, crack passwords, or hack into someone's computer. We don't do that, and that's where their objections came in. I jumped in with both feet because I know there are many legitimate reasons to change a MAC address but some of the responses indicated there is no good reason why you would need to do that, and went on to suggest it was a needless thing to do, and that people were clueless for asking. I took exception that.

But all is good now (I hope) so don't worry about and I am glad you got your system connected. I just hope it really is a free service and that I did not help you commit a crime!

Thank you for the clarification, my dear friend
I want you to know and the person who spoke on this subject know I am an honest man and I have the faith and the fear of God so a person like me is not doing something like that.
With all due respect to the people of America, but we are Arabians doesn't steal even if we can do that. we are afraid of God, who always see us even if we did not see him.
By the way, I'm provider of free Internet service in my city and I have users. I have got this problem with one of my users and I was trying to be solved only.
Be assured you did not help me to do the crime, but helped me to do good job, God care you.
thank you
