Possible repair to gadgets not working

I had this problem occur as well. It appeared some of the gadgets, such as the currency converter, were trying to update on-line, but couldn't so after a minute or so the program timed out essentially and stopped. I woud close the open program window informing of the error and all desktop gadgets would disappear.

Through Control Panel / Appearance / Gadget Link I tried to reset gadgets to original state and uninstall them, but couldn't do either as the program would go into its spin cycle and I couldn't access either option.

Finally out of desparation I tried the Install Gadgets option along side these other two and lo and behold I was able to access and close out (get rid of) the gadgets currently in place on my desktop, reboot and re-invoke the gadgets and now it works again. Seemed counter intuitive try Install Gadgets, but it allowed me access to remove the existing gadgets that the other options did not.
