Introducing ChromeOS


This is a ChromeOS image converted to VMware .vmdk file.

It was built from instructions provided on the ChromiumOS developers site:
Build Instructions (The Chromium Projects)

Built from sources retreived on 11/19/2009, following the announcement of the opening of the ChromeOS source code.

Shared user password (for sudo, etc is 'chromeos')

Just tried it, wasn't too impressed. They still need to WOW me. hehe I did get a chuckle from the task manager in it.

ok...so I ended up with a vmdk.bz2 file. How am I supposed to open that in either VMWare or VirtualBox? Am I missing something?

1. VMWare only.
2. Create new Virt. Machine
3. Do what you normally do.
4. When you get to it, choose the option to use an existing virtual hard disk, then choose the thing you downloaded.
5. Use a bridge network instead of NAT.
6. Finish up and boot up!
7. Use your Gmail/Google Account to login.

BEWARE: This does access the internet with your gmail account, there is no way to use it without doing so. If you feel uncomfortable with using your gmail account either make a random one and use that or just don't use Google Chrome OS.

Sorry if its a tad vague, half awake, 5:38am, and just uninstalled VMware lol.

Is VMWare free btw guys? ive never used it before, just the Virtualbox.

Only VMWare Player is free I believe, I also believe you need Workstation to use this, if so then just get the free 30-day trial here

got one question here
just using VirtualBox to mount the image from the pirate bay, it "can work", but reacting is slow. Is it because of Vbox? (VMware better?) or only because of virtual machine?

Well, as you can see by my system specs, I don't have the best laptop, but VMware was decently fast. I get it 2gb RAM though. lol

VMWARE player doesn't need vmware workstation and is 100% FREE.

Vmware server is also 100% free -- I'd go for that one BTW unless you want to run W7 virtual machines with full aero on them.

vmware server is fine for XP with all the themes you could possibly need.

Here's an example of a W2K3 VM server under vmware server with the Royale Noir theme and a beautiful Jaguar lifted from the Brazilian W7 theme (extracted the wall paper).

I must admit I thought Jaguars were idiginous to Costa Rica rather than Brazil -- the powers of the Internet !!.

I'll probably play around with Google Chrome on a VM (vmware type of vhd) later although I'm not particularly keen on Ubuntu -- I prefer Open SUSE 11.1/11.2 but with Linux of course YMMV.

What is the Royale Noir theme? And how do you get your themes? I want to spruce up my Server 2008 and Windows 7..and XP.

An entire OS that is completely integrated into a single vendors on line services and /requires/ you to use them to even use the OS?

I really don't like the kind of computing world that is heading towards... (IPhone etc included) We've been there in the "distant" past and got away from it for good reason.

Having 30 OSes each locked into a single vendors offerings was and will again be an annoying nightmare of incompatibility, non-portability and total vendor lock-in.

Google is not here to "Free us from Microsoft" but to "Enslave us to Google" and that enslavement will be a lot tighter than Microsoft ever was.

I want to use selective google services on my OS of choice, not be locked into all of them on their OS. Not even on my phone.

for the people that dont trust the torrent and get slow speed regarless of how many seeds...

Thanks DNG. I got it installed in VMWare. Seems like it's pretty barebones at the moment, but I can see the potential here. I don't think MS has much to worry about, even in the NetBook market...
