"lag" in online games with Windows 7

huh, well that's really interesting. first of all, it's confirmed now it can occur on systems even with plenty of CPU power, and... it affects offline games. huh. ok. of all those games, did they all have problems before the fix?

No, these are the games I tested and had NOT any problems anytime.

How do i get my network like this??? like at a constant speed. so i can test the audio and see if it drops

and to reduce it you do these

• Open regedit
• Go to: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Multimedia\SystemProfile
• There will be an entry for network performance throttling, default value is 10; set it to FFFFFFFF hex (willl look like 0xFFFFFFFF to the right of the entry)
• Reboot

and the first 1st way you have it is for a sound issue conflict correct?

the desired effect is the same: turn off network throttling. the first way is brute force, however, and results in audio issues. the second way is more elegant, as it leaves the service running to properly manage the sound sub system, but tells it not to throttle the network, which is what is causing all the weird lag and stuttering problems.

Hey guys thanks for the advice.

First of all, I think if I disable my sound device, there's no point playing cos I'm just playing a very silent game and I doubt it will fix it, as I've tried to completely turn off my sound as well.

About bottle necking, everything is running smooth except for games being delay in game as well as spikes. Bottle necking should only cause FPS problems if I'm correct and not online delays etc. I have now changed back to Windows XP and all my games are running smooth. Very frustrated as I was looking forward to W7, I'm also wondering if it might have an issue if my HardDrive is running at a lower speed?

@sotorious: that is correct.

@unrl: this is not a case of bottlenecking. this is a case of network throttling that the MMCSS is causing, unless you turn it off. you do not disable your sound card permanently, only temporarily to diagnose the issue. turning the volume down or muting the sound will not have the same effect.

Well what I am experiencing is audio no matter what the source will have some type of problem while I am playing dungeon fighter. It is the only game so far that I have any issues with.

Basically even if I mute the music in the game and use winamp or media source or windows media player it will still have random problems playing the audio. I have a feeling the game is so poorly optimized at this point that the access it has to the audio device is what is causing this. I will just have to wait until they fix it.

Network throttling is what the MMCSS does while trying to balance the priority of various tasks, like audio processing. By default, it seems to throttle the priority / attention given to network functions in favor of audio processing, which is why, for some people, it causes lag in games.

Deleted? You just make it a bunch of Fs. (check and see how many)

I have same problem, mine have good low ping on COD4 but randomly lags.
I tried regedit trick and also putting steam.exe on low priority (for MW2) but nothing work so far.
I will try WZC later and I read somewhere someone fix it by changing the router.

MW2 has some chopping problems espically on certain maps. terminal is the one i notice it the most on even offline playing by my self in that map.

I tried the above fix because I play regular on a server with a ping of 40-60. When I upgraded to win 7 32-bit my pings went to 180's plus!!! Well low and behold my pings are back to normal. Thank you.

Just give you an update,
I tried to lower the texture quality from extra to high and it help little bit. I still get lags, but definitely better.
Suddenly two days ago everything work perfectly with lag no more.....wow
I dont if game update or windows update fix it, but now MW2 run smoothly.

After few days running smoothly, now started lagging again.
I dont know what was wrong, but this is very annoying.
I just replaced my router to new N router but it did not help

I have the same problem, but, when i play.... every 8-10-15 minutes ping goes to 2000-3000 and it all LAGS for 10-15 secs. And than something shows CL_flushEntryPacket..... I need to do something to fix this, but I dont know what???

I just wanted to sign up to say: Huge thanks to the OP. This was a problem I tried everything to fix, not knowing what it was I flashed upgraded, tweaked, etc for probably 10 hours across a couple weeks, it plagued me so much in L4D2. Your solution completely cleared it up for me. Thanks a ton.

I just sing up to say THANK YOU! Solution worked for me with Counter Strike Source and L4D. I spent a lot of time trying everything: drivers, antyvirus, firewall, defender, reinstal CSS........

I have only one question: Everyone having Win 7 have the same Multimedia Class Scheduler network throttling component running, why only small part of users have this problem?
