When I boot into vista (duel boot) and try my usenet reader to download data I have no problems and the d/l speed hits 6.3 mbs per sec. when I boot into windows 7 and use the same software the e6600 processor pegs at 95-100% and the d/l speed doesn't get over 1.5 mbs per sec. The mouse cursor langs and you can't do anything untill the download is complete and all drops back to 30% memory and 5% CPU. I have tried different usenet readers with the same result. any ideas please?

Hi and welcome

I suspect you are using homgroup and it uses IPv6. In vista it uses IPv4. IPv6 is known to couse random slowdowns, drops, and connectivity problems.

I also DL from usenet with newsbin. Changing to IPv4 cured the problem. Let us know if you need help changing from homegroup to workgroup

here is an update. I have d/led dpc latency checker and have tested the pc. there is a bad driver somewhere causing MAJOR latency issues when downloading of off a usenet reader. I have booted into safemode with networking and had no problems obtaining maximum speeds and not pegging the cpu. I have tried going into device manager and disabling one thing at a time to find the "culprit" but so far no luck. what if it is the networking driver? if I disable it I can't d/l so I can't test it :) Any ideas on how to find a needle in this win7 haystack? thanks for looking, Q

I suspect you are using homgroup and it uses IPv6. In vista it uses IPv4. IPv6 is known to couse random slowdowns, drops, and connectivity problems.

Unless the Usenet addresses you are using point to IPv6 addresses, they ARE using IPv4. Like I said in a previous post, IPv6 is only used when it is used. Also Windows 7 is using the same networking stack as Windows Vista and the same IPv6 implementation. And just like Windows 7, Vista tries to make use of IPv6 when available.

IPv6 is NOT known to cause "random slowdowns, drops, connectivity problems." If you are having trouble with IPv6 I suggest you fix the real cause, your drivers/hardware.

Nor is Homegroup even involved in this process. Homegroup is a SMBv2 layer service that works only at the local network level, it does not get involved with remote connections (aka., internet applications).
