I think the engine is pretty weak and the brand is idiotic "Mcafee"? Stick with stronger apps - Kaspersky, Norton, BitDefender.

Hi there
I really wouldn't bother with this -- I'm sure MSE (Microsoft Security Essentials) is a FAR FAR better bet -- and you don't have to register either.

These days give AS LITTLE details out over the web as possible. You never know where it will end up or who will be using the data you supply.

MSE is updated almost daily and done automatically when you update your system.

It sits in the background -- hardly noticeable and gives real time protection too.

I'd avoid people like macfee -- they are only around these days because of the amount of large corporate accounts they had in the past -- and protecting a corporate network is a totally different ballgame to providing protection for one or two home workstations.

Overdoing security is actually worse than none --you'll be blown away with "false positives" etc etc.

Keep it small, simple and efficient -- go for MSE.

Cheers

Installation is very quick and easy.

Taking up to 35-40 MB RAM when idle.
View attachment 27800

Quick scan nearly takes 5 mins.
View attachment 27803
Firewall is easily configurable.

View attachment 27804

Interface is very simple. I guess its because its a beta version. Mcafee total protection 2009 has a different GUI altogether.

View attachment 27802

Will check on the detections and heuristics later.

Overall a very nice product. But can slow down old computers.
Nevertheless, if you've got 4 GB RAM, would you mind giving 40-50 MB towards security?;)

Dinesh. :)

McAfee uses a lot of memory
Kaspersky uses less

Well if you're talking about RAM usage comparison, Avast uses only 2-4 MB RAM, which is the lightest.

How much RAM does Norton 360 use on your machine Dinesh?

I found that when using Firefox Avast! 5 Free used on average 3MB more than Norton, using around 13MB but all other times when idle Avast! used around 6MB.

My Computer

OS
Arch Linux 64-bit
Sometimes Norton 360 V4 uses around 25-30 Mb but sometimes it uses around 4-8 MB.

Hi there - if you are worrying about such twiddly unimportant things as 13 MB RAM usage you probably need a new computer or you might be better suited to doing your work on an old abacus.

Memory is ALWAYS used in an OS -- but guys get real --this is a TOTAL IRRELEVANCE.

How the software performs is much more important -- I can give you a ziddly teeny app (around 30 KB -- yes KB only) that could kill your machine STONE DEAD in seconds.

Cheers

I'm not worrying about something so trivial.

I was surprised to read that Avast! uses only 2-4MB on Dinesh's system when it uses up to 15MB (usually 13MB when using Firefox) on my system.

Well, Avast is the lightest AV I have ever seen. I have used and tested almost all the AVs out there but this is the most lightweight. Average RAM usage of Avast is around 4-8 MB. Sometimes its even between 1-3 MB.

Surprisingly true. :)
