I just got my Phemon II x2 [email protected]!!!

Here's what I got running for speeds atm... =) I bothered to see if I can get this stable now...

CPU:3.9
RAM:[email protected]
Chipset:[email protected]
HT:1580

Oh it makes me so happy! Oh I hope I can get this stable, that's an extra 900Mhz on each core, almost a 30% increase per core! Oh that's nice.

Hey MRB

What flavor of BSOD did you want again? <g>

btw you could tell us your system specs now and save the post bsod rush

Seriously

32bit or 64, what video, ram etc.

thanks and good luck

I have to underclock the ram though as I didn't get the higher speeds, which I should have and just clocked them to 1700. =( I wasn't thinking at the time though, how lame. Also on a side note, I had to drop it down to 3750 as I don't have my coppter heatsink on atm and temps are causing BSOD's. ARRRRRG. I hate having to figure out all these numbers and what voltages should work ect... lol But I do like getting 3750 per core, It's at least 25% increase =) and the ram doesn't have to be messed with! lolz. It's at 1666 atm now.

[edit] For future notice, that motherboard does allow core unlocking, so if anyone wants to upgrade I'd recomend it as you can get a phenom II and at least try to unlock the cores, I had all cores unlocked but I'm guessing I have bad L2 caches as the disabled cores lock up under load. =( But it's a gamble, and at least you get the possibility to upgrade to x4 later!

Welcome to the world of overclocking ;)

Just when you think it's stable... ;)

I know, I've done it over and over again lolz. It almost borders insanity.

lol, I did reach insanity.

My machine has been overclocked to varying limits for a year. It's passed 24hrs P95 /24hrs memtest/ 30-50 passes of IBT etc several times yet I still had varying degrees of BSoD instances.

A few days ago I had one BSoD too many, finally snapped and went right back to stock clocks.

The thought of starting it all over again just leaves me cold at the moment ;)

30-50 passes of IBT is too much, you will shorten the CPU's life.

There is no need to run that many passes, 5 is the REC so say 10-15.

You seem to have tested it in all types bar 3D, I have seen PC's passes all Prime/IBT etc and fail in a Games or 3D Mark, same goes vice versa.

Yeah, I only did that many runs once or twice when I was frustrated. I ended up ditching it altogether because it was too harsh with no guarantee of stability anyway.

lol, that's where I 'truly tested' the OC's and got the vast majority of Blue Screens.

Some games worked without a hitch, others failed sporadically and some just crashed and burned straight away. The crash dumps were never conclusive.

I was literally tearing my hear out trying to work out whether it was hardware or a dodgy driver that followed me through different builds/OS'es.

I'm still not 100% sure, although I'm leaning towards h/ware. I probably pushed something too far for too long

Would seems its the part of the CPU that does 3D then, the test for 3D in Sandra Si etc will not stress it enough.

Some games simply do not like overclocks even if they are stable on other games and stress programs.

Physics, but it's also many other factors. Some games work the L2 cache more, and when I unlocked two of my processors they had bad L1 or L2 cache, either way some games crashed some didn't. it's really how they program the game/app to use the cpu. Some are just more cpu intensive! Since the cpu has various parts, everything might be fine except x part, and if that x part is weak and gets hot it might "fail". =P Either way it's not worth finding out why, it just means lower the speeds. lolz

Naw, she was only running 40C then, I'm thinking though they lowered the temp shutdown on the die because anything over 45C I believe and it shuts off (thank god for die protection! lol). Anyways a copper heatsink should do the trick.

I have an Intel but I know if it fails on the Small Test its normally the CPU, so it needs more VCore or PLL Voltage or even CPU GTL's adjusted.

If it fails on the Large Test its the Motherboards NorthBridge/Chipset and it needs increase to the NB Voltage or NB GTL needs adjusted.

There is more variable's than above but you get the picture.

I would say your looking at the CPU side of things but it can be any part really.

Well nothing fails when the 2 locked cores are disabled, but once I enable them.... So I'm pretty sure it's just the cpu side of things but yeah I get what you mean.

Are you saying you unlocked cores ?

If so that's the reason, most if not all are locked and downgraded to lower CPU's as they have weak cores.

It does not make sense to lock good cores but does make sense to not throw away CPU's due to bad cores.

Welocme to the world of overclocking addiction. I can't tell you how many hours I've spent overclocking, finally I decided well that was intresting and now just do a minor OC and have learned to live with it. Best of luck and enjoy.Fabe
