Windows 7 passes Mac OS X in market share race

Weekend numbers for new OS bigger than for all versions of Mac OS X, says Net Applications

Computerworld - Windows 7 passed the 5% market share milestone last weekend, which put it, if only temporarily, above the total market share of all versions of Apple's Mac OS X, a Web measurement firm said today.

Last Saturday and Sunday, Windows 7 powered an estimated 5% and 5.14% of all computers that were online those days, according to Internet metrics vendor Net Applications. The two-day average of 5.07% was higher than the 5% of the market that Net Applications said Apple's operating system averaged for the week of Nov. 15-21.

"It's safe to say that Windows 7's daily share did peak above Mac's weekly share," said Vince Vizzaccaro, executive vice president at Net Applications, in an e-mail today. Vizzaccaro said his company had not yet compiled daily averages for Mac OS X, something that would be necessary to compare Windows 7's weekend numbers with the same dates for the Mac.

When Windows 7's Nov. 15-21 average was matched against Mac OS X, however, for an apples-to-apples comparison, Microsoft's 4.15% lagged behind Apple's 5%.

But Vizzaccaro was confident that Windows 7 would soon pass Mac OS X for good, and not just during a short stretch. "Certainly, the trend line shows Windows 7 will surpass Mac share soon," he predicted.

I find this quote from the article pretty interesting:
With a week left in November, Windows 7 currently sports a 3.9% monthly average. At its current pace, it will reach 4% for the month, which means Microsoft's newest OS will have easily beaten Vista's first four months of market share gains.

Was there any surprize? Not really! While it doesn't mean people will be found waiting in long lines to get a copy of 7 the initial reactions for the new version will outline the success rate when people are voting more confidently for it including how the business world reacts there as well. The market figures more or less reflect what the corporate world has to say!

Seems a bit suspect. That's awfully fast for an OS to pick up marketshare like that. But I hope it's true. Not a fan of Mac.

I'm never fond of any OSs that grow on branches of trees either! It's bad enough when you have to download some version of their player in order to use some of the elements in it when simply going to an MS blog page!

I'm sorry, but I have to ask. Are you going to just post trash talk about OS X on any thread that has anything about it?

Oh and for the record OS X Leopard and Snow Leopard is in fact, better then Windows 95.

no actually im thinking of getting a macbook pro but not for the os.. i havent really used mac osx but im sure if i took the time to get used to it that it might be ok.. but if its like the iphone where they sell you a phone and tell you how to use it and what you can install, then i wouldent like it

Correction, the iPhone has a very basic port of the OS: OS X. It is NOT the same OS. If it was then people could install adobe flash on it, java, etc. just by running the .dmg file.

my bad then... but my point was that with the iphone apple restrict you so much and tell you what you can and cant install.. i wonder if they are the same using their macs... but supposed to be a lot more stable and virus free right?..

ideneb it says on ur profile isent that to install hackint0sh rather then the actuall os? or is it the same? i remember i tried ages ago to install ideneb so i could get pwnage tool for the iphone couldent work out which drivers to put it wouldent install properly.

OSX is probably a big factor in getting MS back on track, resulting in W7.

I'm still amazed you tried to judge the OS by its stripped down phone version.

OS X is not restricted. Any program developed for it, can be installed. Assuming its compatible with the version (for example, trying to install Safari 4 update on OS X 10.5.4, which Safari 4 requires 10.5.7+ I believe).

It has less viruses in my opinion only because it is Unix-based and has very little market share.

Hackintosh'd PC's are those that run a slightly modified version of OS X. Its only modified enough to allow it to boot on a non-apple product. So basically changing around the kernel a bit to not check for an Apple EFI Firmware or anything similar. Its in my profile but I currently do not have it installed do to some minor issues I had with my graphics.

I've never spent any length of time using OSX, so I don't make any blanket statements.

iTunes on Windows however, is another story all together... :devil:

itunes and safari is ok actually..

unlike ie8 that crashes just by opening it.. well very easily... dunno if thats just me.. the beta ie8 was more stable

Agree. I will never understand why people love W7 and hate Vista. But thats just my opinion.

Safari maybe, but I hate iTunes with an absolute passion.

iTunes 9 is a lot better then iTunes 8. I give them that.. Safari 4 Beta was a lot better then the final version also.
