How do I boot to DVD to install Win7

Just noticed, in Brink's excellent tutorial How to Do a Clean Installation with Windows 7, a warning that, unless the installation is started from DVD as first boot, you don't have the option to install to drives other than to the one on which you are running your current OS. Therein lay my original problem: I cannot boot from either DVD or flash drive.

Well, not exactly. If you use Vista disk management (or a third party partitioning tool) to create and format NTFS the second partition, then you will be able to choose to install it there from the Win7 installer run from Vista, choosing Custom install.

After posting my previous, final, rueful resignation, this morning I gave your suggestion about installing Win 7 to a different drive from within my current XP OS a go, and lo and behold, I had the option to do just that. Everything is up and running. Now, I need to find out how to contact Brink, to let him know that his warning in his otherwise excellent tutorial is incorrect (that you only get the option to install to a drive different from that on which your current operating system resides if you boot from the DVD drive).

And once again, thanks to everyone for their help. I've learned a lot on this subject along the way.

I use that method all the time for installing different Operating systems to ready made partitions and instead of using DVD's I use an ISO image mounted with a virtual drive such as "virtual clone drive" for me this is merely a progression from installing OS on older systems in the days of win95 and win98 when there was no CD available, I would simply copy the full disc across and run the setup.exe from the drive in DOS

Dual boot is up and running now, gregrocker, but thanks for your latest input. Virtual drive is unknown to me; I must have a look at that. I used SIW to partition and format my drive.

Just caught up with your last posting, gregrocker. I'll note your advice for future reference, but I was trying to install alongside XP, not Vista. I had used Easus to partition and format. Thanks again.

hi to all those who helped me install windows 7 it really is a breeze to use i have the x64 ultimate , i did a complete fresh install and installed office pro beta 2 as well my computer really is much quicker anyone no where to get hold of the office 2010 beta 2 as mine expires soon, It is brilliant .I installed both of these from iso files burned to disc with imgburn but you must set the boot order in the bios setting to boot from disc 1st in the boot order on my motherboard asus striker 2 extreme you press delete on boot up after the computer boots up or after the computer beeps once then scroll across the menu to boot then alter to boot from disc 1st in the list or it wont work. sorry i didnt get back sooner to you all as i did a complete new install but i do have to wait for new drivers for my motherboard and printer hp officejet j5780 to be honest this printer is only 6 months old but at nearly £50 each for the inkjets i think ill bin it so nigh on £100 for to large ones is a right rip of but its a great printer anyone reccomend i think ill go laser allso adobe bringing out x64 drivers for flash reader as windows 7 x 64 isnt compatable yet In any case my new windows 7 ultimate x 64 boots up from start to full use in less than 20 seconds which as opposed to my windows xp 32 bit which was a real slouch thanks to you all and now i can get back to you all as the windows forum blocked my login details for some reason i had to change them

What makes you think you need mobo drivers? Performance issues?

The Win7 installer is pretty much driver-complete - since MS funded the partnership with manufacturers to build Win7 drivers, they have them first.

I'd stick with the drivers provided in installer and via Windows Updates unless specific performance issues steer you toward alternatives.
