I did an upgrade from 32bit xp to win7pro and I have to say it is outstanding. Although I am still running 32bit I have absolutely no problems. The performance I unleashed with my new MoBo and CPU is incredible. I went from a 5mb/s internet connection to a 20mb/s connection. Being an older fella (59) and never having any formal training in computers it took about a week to get used to this OS. My biggest problem is I like to tinker and tweak lol. I have refrained from this urge so far. I have a few devices that are still in generic listings but only need to find drivers for them to access addons. XP mode was very helpful and thank you for the instructions I got here to install it.

Here is a spec sheet on my system. Is there anything you would change. I am open to all suggestions.

Thanks Steve

I see nothing that I would change, but allow me to give you a recomendation. If you love to tinker with your computer, make a system image now. Put it on an external hard drive. Every time that you make a change, and it works great, replace the prior system image with a new updated one. The benefit: you will never have to return to this site with the statement, I tweaked my computer now I have a problem. In that situation all you will have to do is replace the problem with the prior image, that was working great.

I would swap McAfee for Avast free home, the lightest weight least intrusive AV. With Win7 Firewall and default Windows Defender, it works perfectly with very little resource hit.

I made lots of tweaks in XP/Vista as well but have found that none are needed in Win7, just normal settings.

I'd use 64-bit - x86 is obsolete. Make sure your drivers are updated too - you can use the guide in my sig and also check device manager for any unknown hardware, right click select update online or check for a driver in Windows driver store.

My only suggestions.
Given that you tinker get acronis and back up religiously. Seven is truely awesome as you are just discovering.
dl cpu-z and gpu-z both free to monitor temps.
Dont use reg cleaners (IMHO they hurt more than help)
and look in our tutorial section. Our Admin brink has made some outstanding instructionals.

Good Luck, ask questions and learn

In this my learned colleague we differ. As one who has done more than a thousand BSOD analysis and the majority by far are 64bit, I would differ. It depends mostly on the OP usage.

Obsolete as x86 is of 500 crashes 440 were 64bit. X86 uses less resourses, less HD space and the driver support is better.

The rest I am in agreement with you.

Fair enough, but you can't say exactly what could have caused those crashes in all those situations - human error, software, fiddling with the registry, drivers, x64 will have as many problems as x86 as its more accepted.
