Hi I just installed Windows 7 over my XP-SP3 os. I can't change the screen resolution. When I go in & select 1024x768, my monitor goes black with a square box that says "Video Mode Not Supported". I can select other screen resolutions but that error comes up & when it goes away, my selected resolution doesn't save.

My monitor is a Samsun 173v.

I did install the monitor driver & the utility drivers that came with the computer a long time ago. I assume the graphics card drivers were in there? I also went to devices & updated all drivers... only 3 actually downloaded updates & the rest were good. However that didn't solve my problem.

It also gives me that same error everytime I reboot or turn the pc on & then resumes the normal screen when Windows is loading the desktop.

As you said drivers that came with computer a long time ago, You need the newest drivers that are for windows 7 especially the graphics card driver. What graphics card do you have, can you fill in your system specs more.

I've already gone into Devices & clicked Update Driver for all devices - a couple updated & the rest said they were already current. Problem still persists after doing that.

How do I find out what my graphic card is?

OK we have to do it this way. Go to device manger>click on display adapter>properties>details tab>drop down menu>hardware id. Copy and paste the hardware id string. Fabe (edit) it would also help to know if you are trying to install 32 bit or 64 bit as you only have half of the minimum ram requirements for a 32 bit system. Another important piece of hardware is your motherboard, if it's a Nforce 2 or 3 no way.

It's an SIS 651 Graphics. Their are some 2009 drivers for windows XP. in microsoft Update catalog, which you can try and install in compatibility mode http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/316-compatibility-mode.html Choose the most current driver from the catalog>click on add>save to basket>click on view basket >choose location to download>download. Go to device manager click update driver>browse>let me pick>have disk>point it to the place you downloaded the driver and install. I really don't know if it will wotk, but good luck. Fabe http://catalog.update.microsoft.com/v7/site/Search.aspx?q=SIS%20651%20driver OK I just want to also add it is very difficult to help members when we don't know what all your hardware is or what version 32 or 64 bit seven your using.

Your welcome. Your best bet is with 32 bit version of 7 as your 512mb short of the minimum system requirements for seven. Fabe

Ok I am just getting around to trying this. I went to ms update catalog but am not sure which driver to choose - they all seem to say Fujitsu, Mirage or Siemens Computers. Does this matter? Am I just picking the most recent by date & XP?

Also how do I install in Compatibility Mode?

Thanks for the help!

I don't think I can - this problem occurs when I try to change my screen resolution to something higher than 800. When I click Apply, my screen goes black with a little red box that says "Video mode not supported". When this happens, I can't use the Snippet tool & any keyboard functions (i.e. Print Screen), aren't recognized & have no effect. I did TRY it, but when I was able to paste into paint, it didn't capture what I needed. It was a jarbled mix of my desktop background with black overlaying on top.

Yes, that seems like a driver issue. Do you know what video card you have? If not, try Speccy, that will tell you.

Hmm, can't seem to find graphics card.

Okay, let's try this way: do you have a desktop or a laptop?

Edit: Nevermind, I see that you have a desktop.

Do you have onboard or discreet graphics?
