Hello,

I have Diskeeper 2010 Pro Premier x64bit version and I installed it on my Windows 7 Ultimate x64.

I'm having a problem using manual defragmentation.

I have two partitions: C:\ (100GB) and D:\ (197GB) and I can analyze both of them but when I try to run manual defragmentation of any of them I get this error message:

"The defragment operation you requested failed to start on volume (C: ). For more information refer to the Diskeeper Help and Windows Event Log"

Same is for D:\ partition.

Also, I asked some of my friends and colleagues and they also have the same problem.

Can you please help me?

Thank you on your time.

OK, after some time I installed Raxco's PerfectDisk.

Can you, MasterB confirm that Professional version 10 build 124 is the latest version?

Any tips on configuration? I would like that, like Diskeeper - PerfectDisk automaticly prevents fragmentation on my Windows 7. What to turn off and what on? How to make it most efficent?

Can you explain me what "Boot time" box means by each of my drives (in main window of PerfectDisk) and should I check it? Should I use "Defragment system files" option from time to time?

And last question, is there a way that there is some kind of silent way to shield or prevent fragmentation by PerfectDisk? How good is algorithm of this application when you compare it to the for example - Diskeeper? Your experiences?

Thanks.

If you have the Raxco product you also have the help files, which would answer all of the points you're raising... however, boot time refers to the process of Raxco PD interrupting the normal Windows boot up and running defragmentation of your paging file (which it can't do when Windows is in session for obvious reasons).

You can use Raxco to schedule an offline defrag' once a week, or whatever suits you... offline meaning it will reboot the computer and defrag' the page file, then boot into Windows and defrag' the remainder of your files.

IMHO Raxco is better than what you've come from... :)

I'm having the same issue. I found this on the diskeeper website and I will try it when I get home. But here you go, if you want to give it a go.

This is likely due to a permissions issue where the drive we are attempting to defragment does not have System and Administrators credentials listed with FULL CONTROL.

To repair this, you may employ the command below to apply those permissions to the volume from the root on down.

1. Bring up a DOS prompt by clicking Start -> Run and typing the CMD command. 2. Go to the root of the drive we are having difficulty with 3. Type CACLS * /e /t /c /g Administrators:F System:F 4. Press ENTER and this command should start to go through each of the files on that volume.

Note: This same command is also used in the SetDKACLS.bat command file and is found in the directory folder where Diskeeper is installed. Example: C:\Program Files\Diskeeper Corporation\Diskeeper

After this has completed and the file security permissions have been added, you should find that Diskeeper will handle the volume properly.

Using the CMD actually didn't work for me. However, I uninstalled and reinstalled and now it works. I can't say for sure if the CMD changed anything which allowed the program to install a little differently or not. Anyway, I think the CMD is worth a try as it's not really difficult to do and doesn't seem to cause any harm otherwise. If that doesn't work, then just uninstall/reinstall and see how that goes.

I'm wondering (and trying to reduce my ignorance) ... would not this command need to be run in an elevated command prompt window in order for the permissions to be changed on files not owned by the current user?

I wondered that as well, and tried it. Still didn't work. It's strange really, even if you run it as an admin it still shows "access_denied" to many of the directories. I fretted over it for some time and decided to just start over, and it's worked great ever since. So as I mentioned previously, I'm not sure if it was the reinstall or the reinstall+CMD that did it.

I have the same problem. It is really strange. I can launch the defragmentation manually after Diskeeper just installed. But, if I turn off the computer and power on again, it doesn't work any more. I had disabled UAC, but in vain.

I've been meaning to update this...I contacted Diskeeper support and they sent me a new installation file/key and it worked for quite a while. However it's started acting up again. I've more or less given up on it anyways. From what I hear the Windows 7 disk defrag is essentially diskeeper light or something similar. Not sure how that's possible, but regardless I have it on a recurring schedule which seems to work out for me.

I do know exactly what you mean though, reinstall it works fine until you shut down. Afterward it never works right. Maybe you should try contacting Diskeeper support. More people report problems and make the issue known, the more likely it'll get resolved. Besides, they are really nice people there. Went above and beyond for me.
