If you have a USB flash drive, you boot the .iso from that.

If the win 7 files are in ISO format simply mount the ISO using something like daemon tools then run it as a virtual disk and in the setup menu point to the drive you want win7 installed to ,

or unpack the ISO and just run the exe ,

the issue will be getting the dual boot to give you access to win7 and your xp install but there are plenty of posts here covering how to do that :geek:

N.B. personally I use easybcd to edit my boot ini and it works for me :)

:sarc: 2gig isn't enough though is it? the iso itself is 3.5gig.. i've found a nice guide for booting a Vista setup from HDD Installing Vista from Hard Disk - Douglas Stockwell's Weblog and since they both use BCD it should match the 7 setup yea?? What about the fact i'm trying to install from a partition located on another hard drive i'm going to install to.. would that cause problems?

From within Windows Vista, mount the iso to a virtual CD ROM drive, using Daemon Tools, UltraISO or something similar.

Then open the new virtual cdrom drive and start setup.exe.

Windows 7 installation will start, and you can choose in which partition to install later on. This way you actually start Windows 7 setup from within Vista, then it reboots and finishes installation giving you a dual boot in the end. ;)

Can you perform a clean install when losing the installer from inside an OS? Because XP to W7 upgrades are a PITA....

Yes...and no. Those instructions format the disk - not a good idea if you want ot preserve your existing OS installation and install W7, which is what hte OP seems to want to do.

it's not an upgrade , you are simply using the OS to run a virtual disk :geek:
