I have an issue. I want to connect Windows 7 and XP via LAN. I have the cross cables and 2 Lan slots.

The first one is connected to a modem (so internet connectivity throught that)

The other one i have used to connect both PCs together. i was able to sucessfully share files and had a healthy ping when both connected. But no internet connectivity. So i tried bridging the both lan connections. the connections between the pcs went away.

I need help.

Hi and Welcome,

When you say the connections between the pcs went away, did u mean you can no longer share file?

Were both PCs able to gain access to the internet after u bridge?

Can i get you to go thru this thread http://www.sevenforums.com/network-sharing/48296-trouble-sharing-between-7-xp-5.html

My setup was w7 to wireless router, Xp to W7 via cable Cat 5.

I have done my setup the same way.

The default (main LAN) is set to automatic IP as it is connected thru modem and has dynamic ip.

I used a 192.168.0.1 on the other lan card on the host PC i.e. windows 7 and used 192.168.0.2 on windows xp. Next i bridged the 2 connections on windows 7.

When the connections are unbridged the file sharing works.

When u allowed auto detect, why did u use 192.168.0.1? or is this ip given by your Router?

If so I find it weird that the IP is that cos usually the first IP should be the default gateway.

I had the gateway at 192.168.1.1

So you telling me that what i should do:

1. Set an ip of 192.168.0.1 to the second connection in my main windows
2. Set an ip of 192.168.0.2 to the XP
3. Next i should check if they ping
4. If yes then i should bridge the first and second connection of my main pc. this way both internet and file-sharing would work?

If yes then this doesnt work.

Can you give me the ipconfig of your main LAN? I don't quite like the zero in the IP.

My fear of the zero in your ip is rightful

On your xp machine:

1) Connect the cross-over cable to your w7
2) Set manaul ip to:

IP = 115.186.121.6 (6 is just a number in my head)
Subnet = should be auto filled out once u hit Tab from the IP location. Otherwise 255.255.255.0
Default Gateway = 115.186.121.1

3) test ping from w7 to xp.
4) once pings are good, leave cable as is, untick manula ip selection and set to auto detect.

5) Goto w7 and select your main LAN and the LAN to your xp,then brigde it.

Give it some times in betweens before testing IE.

The guy in the other thread bought a router and had his w7 hooked up to his wireless network and xp cabled to w7 and he got things working. And i've tested with the router as well.

Have not tested my w7 cabled to my modem like in your case, but will try it, after i get some sleep and get back to u. I wouldn't think it's any different though.
