Avast gives you rock solid protection !

Ok turns out I hadent of updated Avast! (LOL?)
Even thought it said up-to-date, I learned you must right click on the program's taskbar icon and tell it to update.

I updated avast!, rebooted and done a full scan.
TURNS OUT, I had a trojan and rootkit still running.
The rootkit was in my SySWOW64 Drivers folder, and the trojan being a a fake winlogon.exe. I deleted both after the full system scan.

I think ill keep avast! as long as it last :D
Good to hear that it detected those infected files.

Avast 5 in in Beta 3 stage. Its been over 2 weeks that they haven't released any new beta yet. So I guess that's the final beta and next release will be the final version.I guess so... Really not sure when the final release will be out.
Be around to know when its out. ;)

Hmm... wonder how long that rootkit was running?

Hard to tell because when your rig has a quad-core it doesnt really slow down when you get a virus. Basically the only good part about a crappy PC is that YOU CAN TELL when you get a virus and its running.

Remember, MALWAREBYTES, MICROSOFT SECURITY ESSENTIALS AND NORTON failed to detect the files Avast! Caught!

EDIT: Virus Scan of the files:
http://www.virustotal.com/analisis/...195fb608434b9fa59b9cc86306e1c72a52-1261595664

http://www.virustotal.com/analisis/...e53be3dc7b8b48b1c0bad88ddbfa124181-1261595734

I dont think neither of them were running. I had first done a quick scan of avast! which detected nothing, but a full scan showed both of those files. Also, I had never done a full-scan with malwarebytes, MSE or Norton. Norton detected the first one so it must have been just sitting in a folder that Norton doesnt scan during a quick-scan. MSE failed to detect both threats.

Also, after going to "MSCONFIG" neither of theses files are on startup, or ever were on startup.

Stay Safe. Use your brain. Use WOT.

I still have 75 days with NIS 2010 and will probably try avast when it expires... Thanks for the heads up!

I would not wait 75 days and dig it right away. Nothing from Symantec will ever infest my OS anymore. It's a resource hog, it's slow, it doesn't do what you want, does what you don't want and you pay "a lot" for it.

^I agree, it just shows that when it comes to anti-virus software, it's so very much a matter of personal preference - I love Avast (using the free version) and I think it gets better with each and every upgrade. But...always open to ideas.

Well, rootkits perhaps, but to be fair, all viruses, whatever, are considered malware. Malware is short for "malicious software". I would say the "free" edition offers protection against malware, otherwise it isn't doing anything.

I always used to HATE Norton with a passion.

But the newest incarnation, 2010, is actually quite good.

Its been rated as one of the best this year in AV tests, so I thought id give it a try.

I must say, I was quite surprised.
Easy on resources, high detection rate... yet low rate of false positives.

Perhaps not the very best of all choices, but its up there in the top few.

It's come along way, and by no means the resource hog it used to be.

Its also one of the fastest scanners now .....

Not saying everyone go get Norton its the best ... just simply saying .. the new 2010 is far better than most would think. its nothing like older versions.

That's an interesting point WM; the scanner in Avast (what I use) is quite slow and also some other ant-virus solutions; perhaps that's just the nature of scanning? File for file, bit by bit scanning. I notice the same for SpyBot also (which I also have installed).

Norton 2010 is very light and fast. Anyone who says differently is lying or hasn't tried it. People like to blindly hate on Norton like they hate on Vista. And while not free, you can get Norton very cheap. I just bought NIS 2010 3pc - 2 year license for $12 on Ebay.
