Which is Overall more Secure ? Vista or Win 7 ?

I came across some posts on sites where some people have claimed or think that Windows 7 is more secure than Vista. However I believe that both operating systems are essentially equal. Let's not forget that Win 7 is based on Vista's architecture and it uses the same kernel I believe.

However it is true though that some of the Win 7 code is newer, obviously compared to Vista, but overall which operating system do you think is more secure ?

Say, when looking at the UAC aspect, even though one cannot modify any UAC settings in Vista right out of the box, do you think that Vista's User Account Control is just as secure as Windows 7 UAC ?

And, yes I am using Vista as my one and only OS, I did buy Win 7, however I since returned to using Vista on my laptop, reason being because I believe, now you may think I'm crazy but I think that Vista runs better on my system compared to Windows 7.

Anyways I would love to heard your thoughts and or comments

There is a day-1 security flaw in 7 that has yet to be fixed.
But on the other hand they changed password tables between vista and 7.
So until there are new cracking tables for some of my favorite softwares, I have to say 7

Although UAC can be tweaked and modified in Windows 7 to be less annoying to the end-user...I don't think the fundamental functionality has changed in any way.

I'd say Windows 7 is likely more secure...since it's really just a highly polished Vista with some added features and a bit less bloat (at least seems like less bloat).

I'm not familiar with "Password Tables" what is that exactly ?

It is how the passwords are encrypted.

I would say uac is slightly more secure in vista, however because of people getting annoyed with excessive prompts in vista it resulted in many turning uac off making vista run like xp in terms of user restrictions. So looking at it from that point of view windows 7 is more secure.

please excuse my somewhat sarcastic humor - but this sort of question is equivalent to what's better -- a BMW, a Mercedes or an Audi.

Computers can be as safe or as open as the USER makes them.

I would tend to think that W7 might be better protected -- simply because in the course of time better security algorithms are developed.

With MS also entering the security stakes the older paid for bloated security suites will become a thing the past -

Anybody whose used MSE or Forefront client security from MS must be quite pleased with the small footprint and negligible drain on system resources these packages use and they are up there with the best as well.

So the question is really meaningless -- just install decent AV software and use sensible precautions. Hacking is passe / old hat / un-cool these days -- people will attack your computer by other methods such as "phishing" etc etc.

Out of the box 7 has a dual directional fire wall, Vista has a one way
7 has a strong passive UAC, Vista and a strong aggressive UCA(Which cause's people to turn it off.)

Yes 7 has a day one(known) security flaw, Vista had many.

Vista has been out for two years, which means patches, seven has been out not even two months. Guess what, it has patches too .

exactly the same as I said.

technically vista is more secure, but then the author of the document pointed out what I said here in that if you have excessive prompts you tend to stop taking notice and just say yes out of habit or even worse disable uac altogether.

He actually has a very good point...Windows as it stands is out of the box unsecure (for the most part)

UAC is definitely no anti-virus and only goes so far for protection with IE 8 (protected mode on as well)

Even with MSE making strides...Windows will never be bundled with Anti-Virus: MSE will one day be a Windows Optional Update (if that). If they bundled it-it will be EU 2.0

Win 7 is more secure. The permissions and ownership with the new file system makes it more secure no doubt. It also makes it harder to work with files so it's a trade off.
