Hi everybody

It's not that 7057 is bad or anything -- it's just that on 2 of my systems I seem to get better performance with 7048 (x-64) than 7057.

As people have pointed out "Unofficial" or "Semi" official builds may have all sorts of debugging info in them and might be geared to solving particular problems which won't (hopefully) appear in the "Normal Public" builds.

So the fastest I've had is 7048. I've tried them all from the PRE beta until t057.

I'm now abandoning any further "upgrade" installs until the RC1 appears whatever the torrents may bring.

Cheers

jimbo

Hello jimbo45.

To me that's what this is all about; finding what works and what doesn't and letting the collective (I like that term) know the outcome..... ;)...

Keep coming back, it works if you work it.

You know that 7048 is unofficial too, so you better go all the way back to 7000.

Hi there -- I think you misunderstood the point of the post

What I meant was that these "non public" builds might have all sorts of stuff in them (not necessarily malicious) which are there to address particular problems. This means that a later build might behave differently from an earlier build (could be driver diagnostic debugging, limiting the amount of processor "threads", throttling back the throghput for diagnostic and performance analysis etc etc).

Some work really well (such as build 7022 and even better build 7048), some seem to run more sluggishly - not by a lot it must be said however (build 7057).

Since the RC1 is now just around the corner and there doesn't seem to be any extra stuff I need to test -- all my apps and hardware work (apart from a few legacy devices which didn't even work on VISTA (manufacturers have long since gone to "that great Factory in the Sky") -- which I run happily on a Windows XP Virtual Machine, I'm going to leave 7048 running until RC1 and let others play around with any newer builds until RC1.

Of course if some "Really Shattering" feature comes out --well that's another issue but the version of Windows 7 I'm running now (on 2 Machines) seems absolutely Rock solid.

I'll upgrade the rest of my network probably sometime this week -- I then will only have a Linux SUSE 11.1 server and a "Production daily work" XP PRO 64 bit machine which I'll wait until W7 ships in Final before upgrading. (I may switch both these machines to a single Windows 2008 Server -- a long long time since I even thought of using Windows as a server but Windows 2008 server looks good as well -- a topic for another post).

BTW the last straw in Build 7057 was the horrible insipid pale blue logon background and the "girlie peace dove" on the screen. -- You know the one with "Lock this computer, Switch User, Logoff, Change a password etc on it.

The previous build with the bolder colours was much better.

When I came into my "Computer Lab" with a number of machines locked with the build 7057 screen on them I nearly felt sick. My machines are always automatically locked after 10 mins if no activity on them - group Policy.

Cheers

7057 was faster than 7048 7022 and 7000 on my netbook. It may be hardware specific, but if you look at what was focused on in build 7057 i dont see how the speed could be affected.

Internal builds not intended for "public" consumption might have all sorts of "non documented features(?) " in them so whilst the general direction of what the build contains might be correct it's in the detail where problems could arise.

I suspect there are 2 main areas where build 7057 is doing some extra work compared with its predecessor 7048.

1) The installation / startup. Sometimes it takes AGES to get to the Language prompt screen on initial installation -- this appears (although I don't have any rigorous scientific proof for this) to be worse on better equipped machines -- My 16 GB RAM Quad Q9400 system took longer to install from scratch than a smaller 4GB Dual T7250 4GB RAM laptop.

I tried this twice with different physical ISO's just to make sure the DVD wasn't defective.

2) The graphics -- definitely snappier in build 7048. There's probably some debugging / diagnostic stuff in there so that NVIDIAa can get its ***T together.

3) Running the WEI causes problems on some machines on build 7057 and takes a LONG time to run before eventually crashing.

(Running Winsat formal in elevated command mode and "downgrading" the chipset drivers back to the manufactuers rather than the Microsoft "out of the box" cures this in most cases -- normally we shouldn't have to mess around with this stuff -- but hey it's meant to be BETA testing after all).

There might be other stuff in the build as well but as far as I can see that seems about it.

Cheers

I think you should give it some time and a few restarts, say a day or two.
In my case, installing 7057 caused hardware interrupts CPU usage, which other builds didn't, but after it downloaded all the Windows Updates and I had all the necessary drivers installed, this was solved.

However, since build 7000 , 7022 and 7048 didn't cause this performace loss, you still have a point...

I just installed Win-7, 7048 today.
My first install of Win-7 was a couple of months back and it was so bad that after just a few hours I reformatted the HD.

Now I'm trying it again and looking to find out what I can from yous guys that have some experience with it.

I got the download from a friend and the DVD was buggered up and the program wouldn't load.
Today I got a new copy of the DVD and went thru the install process again.
I'm running Win-7 now, with only a few #$%@^&#'s.

My only question is, "Where do I find the Activation key?".
You sure don't get one when you download the test version from the internet.
As it stands now, I have 30 days to test it and then it goes belly up!
It would sure be nice to be able to test this bad boy for more than just 30 days, without having to completely reinstall it.

Is there any Luv out there?

what version are you running

X-64
X-86

there's 2 sets of about 8 keys for each version.

Not sure if it's within the forum rules to post these publicly -- don't see why not as it's common knowledge but PM and I'll send you the correct key for the version you are running

Addendum -- I think you can still actually request the keys from Microsoft although the official downloads of W7 ended a while ago.

The Beta (build 7000) keys all work for th latest builds (so far).

cheers

I would think that M$ would be a little more liberal with their TEST releases.
Locking up a TEST program with an Activation key seems like a little bit of OVERKILL.

It is easier from a technical point of view to continue to use the built in systems of keys and to supply freely available keys than to specially engineer the code to produce a key less version.

It also provides a test of the actual activation mechanism as part of the Beta process, as any security mechanism that is used may be affected by many different variables.

Now all I need is one of them FREE keys!

Oh, well, I've still got 29 days.

Hi Doc

Join the Microsoft Connect site - Microsoft Connect - and you can get Beta keys from there still. Each key is good for up to 5 machines and you can request more if needed.
Be patient tho, I find the MS Connect site the worst for not being able to connect too...LOL!! Constantly I get the "IE Cannot Display Page" or the sign in page that won't allow you to sign in. Ugh..
Sometimes I find if I Google MS Connect I can get in that way. Even with IE8 being RC1 in 7057, I'm still finding it buggy with page displays that Compatibility View can't fix.

7057 was faster than 7048 7022 and 7000 on my netbook. It may be hardware specific, but if you look at what was focused on in build 7057 i dont see how the speed could be affected.

I would agree with this, it won't even install on my pc (unlike every other build), but works better than any other build on my laptop :)

Its all very hit and miss with the leaked builds, i have been lucky until 7057.
