Hi!
I'm new to Win 7 and I have a question, that may seem a bit stupid to the most of you... I bought my first laptop (Acer Aspire 5738G) and it came with Win 7 x64 Home Premium installed on it, but I got no DVD! What do I have to do in order to be able to reinstall 7 at anytime?!
Thanks.

Hi csuliga, there is no such thing as a stupid question (for or to anyone), so sorry you'll have to take that back

I would suggest you go back to the store and ask for a recovery version of w7 (DVD), as it should have come with your purchase. This version will not let you installed on any other machines, as it technically isn't a full version. With this DVD you can restore your w7 back to original state should anything goes wrong.

Most laptop nowadays came without OS disk.
As manufacturers think User shouldn't reinstall their OS, but if something happens they should use Recover partition.
And they also give option to burn recovery partition into disk (which is recommended)

Most new Acer laptops come with built in software to create your own "Recovery Discs" on to DVD etc.
The manual for your laptop states

Acer eRecovery Management
Acer eRecovery Management is a tool to quickly restore the system. You can
back up/restore the factory default image, and reinstall applications and drivers.
Note: All of the following content is for general reference only.
Actual product specifications may vary.
Acer eRecovery Management consists of the following functions:
1 Backup:
• Create Factory Default Disc
• Create Drivers and Applications Disc
2 Restore:
• Completely Restore System to Factory Defaults
• Restore Operating System and Retain User Data
• Reinstall Drivers or Applications

So just have a looky for "eRecovery Management" most proberly under program files and just follow the on screen instructions ;)

With a bootable ISO, repair or reinstall would not be a problem at all :)

But does that link still assume you have/need the dvd for the Windows Installation Files folder. It seems to suggest so or am I getting confused, Lol.

You basically have two options here...

1) Get yourself an ISO image of a Windows 7 Disc (7600.16385) and follow the tutorial that Arc posted to make yourself a Windows 7 Installation DVD just like the one in those boxes on the shelf. It will allow you to perform an upgrade (you shouldn't need this) or perform a clean installation (format/reinstall...if the need arises).

2) Make a recovery DVD via Windows or Acer's software. This ONLY allows you to restore your computer to the backup that Acer placed upon a hidden backup partition on your computer. If a complete format->reinstall seems a little intimidating and you don't mind going back to when your computer was originally at...this method would be great for you.

...or you could do both...never hurt anyone

Once again, forgive me but is this a free download and from where? Thanks.

Since this is technically retail software I can't provide you with a link...do you have a friend who bought Windows 7 at a store inwhich you could copy the disc (1:1 copy)?

Ah, sorry, you see this is where I'm getting confused. The OP asked (I think?) what to do if the computer came without a disk. If no recovery partition available or recovery disks, then all the pointers suggested still point to having to obtain a disc. Vicious circle. Even the .iso example means one having to obtain the disc...sorry, I'm just getting confused.

I apologize for the confusion...

The recovery options (either Windows or Acer's utilities....already on the machine) will burn a disc to be used at bootup to recover the computer to a previous point in time. This could be a System Restore point backup OR a re-image from the hidden recovery partition Acer installed on the HD.

I merely mentioned the prospect of acquiring a Windows 7 Installation Disc so one could install the OS from scratch.

I am just providing options here

Acer will send you recovery disks for free within 90 days of purchase. Call tech support.

Maker's don't provide clean copy DVD's any longer because their profit margin is now almost entirely made up of the sponsor's bloatware on the computer. So they enforce that bloatware by making it difficult to clean reinstall, insisting we use Recovery Disks which have the bloatware.

This bloatware slows and corrupts the computer, even when uninstalled. The only solution to some of its effects (seen in sfc /scannow unfixable OS corruption) is to find a clean copy Win7 DVD of your version and clean reinstall. It will activate with your license but requires a robocall to MS to sort out the batch key on the box.

Users needing to clean reinstall without bloatware might find some help in this link about MS's efforts to make good on their botched student downloads by providing an ISO to burn: http://gizmodo.com/5391268/microsoft-fixes-windows-7-student-edition-upgrade-problems

Every Win7 32/64 installer contains all versions but some are hidden by the presence of an ei.cfg file in Sources folder, which can be removed by copying files to desktop and then recompiling the ISO to burn to DVD like this: http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/32055-bootable-iso-create-installation-files.html
