I thought so. Have you tried/seen the software? My brother has a DV something or other and had to download it for him, and was quite impressed with the avatar things that use facial recognition, I was sat for about 5 minutes just pulling faces at myself.

The webcam is used in conjunction with other programs such as MS Messenger, Skype and a few more that I can't remember. When you install these programs you can talk live with video to other friends.

I'm sure if you look in your main menu or Accessories menu you may find a HP program that you can use for your webcam. The bottom line is what do you want to use it for? To make a video message and save it?

If you have aFacebook account you can make a video using your webcam. It is like when you want to upload a picture to your message area.

so I cant just turn it on on my computer to fiddle with it and see how it works, I have to actually connect with a service like the ones you describe and it will just...what come on?
I'd like to be able to create a recorded video to upload somewhere or talk live to another location.

I cant find any actual hp software on my computer other than the properties tell me that I have the latest driver no need to update. I guess I'm asking where is the turn on button or program and if I dont have one what is the right one to download?

You may have some HP software on your computer already that you just don't know is there that you can use.

Do you have an webcam icon on your desktop to click on or something?

Muvee autoProducer 5 can connect to a webcam to record video images. A trial version of the Muvee program is included on HP notebook PCs with Windows Vista.
To view and capture video from a webcam with Muvee autoProducer 5, follow the steps below.

1. Click Start, All programs , and then Muvee autoproducer 5.0 - SE to open the Muvee autoproducer main window.
   Alternately, click Start , type muvee into the search field, and then select Muvee autoproducer 5.0 from the list.
2. Select Tools, and then Get video from camera on the menu bar. The application will establish a connection to the camera and open the display in the Muvee Video Capture window.
3. To adjust the video image, click the device settings icon beside the Video Capture Device field to open the camera's properties window.
   Depending on the brand of camera, you can adjust the brightness, contrast, and other properties.

no muvee on my system ( it was an overhaul job where I think the tech guy replaced vista with windows 7 and started everything from scratch - sans the muvee ). just another question, in the webcam setup options, if I choose one like - yahoo - is that a permanent setup process? can i undo it to another at a later date?

Dowload Microsfts Moviemaker for Win7.

You should be able to make a movie that you can see and save.

I just checked it out. It also has MS Messenger Live which is what I use.
If you uncheck everything except Moviemaker then you will only get Moviemaker installe.

Do you havea HP recovery disk?
The software that HP sends out that is a simple program to work with your webcam is called HP Quickplay V3. They have updates on the HP support page but they say it is on the original recovery disk and show how to just install it.

I downloaded windows live messenger and movie maker but still cant access or activate the hp webcam!

( I made a recovery disc - or is that system restore - from the computers own system just after i got it )

do i have to click something specific on moviemaker?

Does the webcam show in your Device Manager? Is there a yellow question mark next to it?

If there is, then you need to install the driver for the webcam.

I downloaded the hp quickplay software and everything turned out fine. got the webcam to work and it looks great in terms of the test by looking at myself in the video image ( not including my bad hair day ) so thank you very much everyone for all the help ( IggyAZ ). so now I can record a video with moviemaker using webcam or quickplay ? and then I could upload that onto a video website ?
