So you bought your computer from Best Buy, you say?

I opted for the undercoating option on my last Computer...

So far...so good.

It depends how far you let them take you in PC World. I bought my netbook from there in the sale last week for £250. I had to tell them about 10 times that I don't want anything extra added to it and anything I do want I'll get myself.

i've learned in these stores just ignore the sales people. they hate that, but they learn very quickly to leave you alone and just make the sale as is without offering any so called extras the next time you come into the store.

The worst thing about this. Is the fact that bestbuy actually has the manufacture pre-install all that bloatware on the pc. Bestbuy could opt out of having it. But they personally order it on. The manufacture does not mandatory install that stuff. But then best buy turns around and charges you to take off the bloatware. But then again that might be why bestbuy can sell computers cheaper than the OEM most of the time with better specs like a c2d instead of a Pentium dual core ddr3 instead of ddr2 ect ect... I guess it is kinda of like commercials pre installed on your pc they must get a kick back and pass it onto the consumer. But if you opt out of them you pay. I mean really how many newbies who don't know what they are doing when being scared about a virus won't right off buy the POS norton that is pre-installed on the pc? So are they scamming in a way i guess but the deals are usually better if you opt out of optimization than through the OEM.

I agree with that to a degree... a few years ago, I purchased an HP Pavilion from Circuit City. Yes, it had all of the crapware / bloatware installed, but some of that crapware / bloatware was because of HP's partnership with software vendors. I agree that places like Best Buy may place some stuff on, but from my experience, it is the OEM that is the one who perpetrates that useless crap on the consumer.

the local best buy here did this to a friend and he managed to get the sale price and 10% off of that by informing them once they opened the box and made changes to the system without his consent it was now considered used by law. he chose to do this on a day when he knew the store would be packed and a raised voice about their practices would cost them sales. you would be surprised what a slightly raised voice at the right time can get a consumer.
Epic.

I should try that sometime.

Actually i had a problem with a laptop once that i bought from best buy and did a re-format from disk and every bit of the bloatware/crapware was removed and all i had was a clean install of microsoft windows vista 64. There was a touchpad tool that i liked and lost so i called the OEM (asus in this case) And they told me that they do not put any of the programs on their pc's unless ordered buy the retailer you buy from. Like, bestbuy staples officemax ect and that they pre-order those programs and put them on only by request thats why the oem restore disk which was keyed to my pc had none of those on it and the only way to get them back is to use the hidden partiton. They said if that didn't work i would have to contact the retailer to get the program. So i used the hidden partition and just removed the bloatware manually.

I feel so bad for the people who get conned into this kinda of stuff.
At all costs, i make sure to let everyone know to let me recommend/or choose out a computer for there needs on-line @ newegg / maybe compusa. If they really insist on buying at a store I tell them to tell me to go and see it. I have a voice that commands attention ( like an asshole but one that knows what he is saying). I actually get a kick out of it and they usually stop. I've helped out at least 20 people in 2 years and only messed up twice.

When i go to the store ie. Best buy since I like to test out mice/trackballs and notice someone being conned, once the salesman/girl? walks away i walk and talk the customer (since i overhear) and tell them to stop and let me help them. I got to help 4 people and 2 later called and said i was correct (gave my #). Gotten banned from 1 best buy since i was interfering with there business.

Do any of you guys try to help people when your at the store?

Building a laptop from scratch is a far more challenging endeavor. Your choices for parts is extremely limited.

For the majority of PC users who buy prebuilt systems, they really aren't that concerned about RAM timings, PSU specs, etc. In addition, if they aren't into gaming...most don't care for the GPU installed either.

I cannot even imagine the debacle it would be if most PC users had to buy parts and assemble their own PC's.

As for a laptop finding the parts is hard enough - the chassis has the screen, keyboard, and motherboard - you need to pick the right chipset and then the rest. Still isn't too hard.
