Hi. first post so be gentle ;)

I'm wanting to buy a new graphics card for my custom built pc, using a 1gb Nvidia 220 GT haven't liked the card since I first bought it. Being seriously thinking of switching over to ATI.

Cannot decide on between these cards

ATI Radeon 4890

ATI Radeon 5770

Wanting to play directx 11 games

Definetly go with a 5870 or better. You'll be glad you did down the road.

I did look at the 5870 but that card is out of my price range, can spend between £100 - £200

Sav, the sad part is you get what you pay for... ;)
So with that said I'd be a bit more patient & save up the money for a better graphics card or you are going to end up with the same results...a card you're not happy with.

I'm not happy with my current card but I'm not going to settle for anything less than the performance of a Nvidia EVGA-GTX275! (Or GTX285)
Yea, it's out of my price range right now & it's the reason I'm waiting & saving until it is in my price range.
If you are wondering why the choice of Nvidia it's because I favor them over ATI. It's a "personal" choice of mine & not a recommendation... ;)

Go in between the 5870 and 5770 - the 5850.
Definitely better than the 275 and in most cases the 285 as well. Go for the cheapest you can find (That will be around £30 - £40 above your budget though :(); later you can save up for another one and crossfire the two ;)

I think that cross fireing 2 ok cards isnt as effective as having one good card. Stick with Nvidia The way its meant to be played (or something)! And gtx295 is awesome.

His budget is £200 right now, but when he saves up again he can get a nice crossfire config.

Sure, but i'd still rather have one Radeon 5970 than 2 4870's since its just better.

Something else to consider

There arent really many DX11 games atm, or planned for very near future.

The 4890 will tear through any current offerings with ease, although its DX 10.1

When Nvidia comes out with thier next gen cards, the higher end 5K series will drop in price making them more attractive.

Also, gives more time to perfect the drivers.

By the time games DX11 is more common, not only will the drivers be in better shape, but better choices for a 5970 (such as Toxics, VaporX etc)

I would just save the cash and get a good 4890 Toxic or similar for the time being, and upgrade next year.

My 2c for what its worth.

Thanks for the replies. Little more into forward thinking, I am wanting to go xfire in the not too distant future ;). Obviously have to change mainboard :p

I can run a 5870 with my config at this moment in time but if went xfire with 2 of these cards may have to change psu?. As well as mainboard.

If went xfire with two 5770, only have to change mainboard.

Lets not have a Nvidia vs Ati debate :p, as I personally think both give the same performance, Ati are ahead with directx11 support.

If Your Motherboard Is Crossfire/Sli Ready No. Make Sure Your PSU is at least 500w.

Depends what type of PSU you have as not all are the same.
12V rail amperage is the key things here, more so than advertised watts. As well as effeciency.

Some, a 550-600W PSU will be plenty.

Other brand may need a 800+ watt to accomplish the same thing.

Well...

Truth of the matter is, we won't be seeing the full benefits of DirectX11 anytime soon (give it a year or so).

With that In mind... I'd go for the HD 4890.

~10% better performance than the HD 5770 according to the majority of reviews out there right now.

Upgrading your computer has one important point:
Try and keep it future proof, so you spend less money in the future. No-one is forcing you to buy what we want, after all its your money, but if I was in your shoes i'd go with the 5850 ;)

These threads seem to be all the same a rip roaring card wars. Plenty of good advice the choice is now yours. I'm thinking if you can wait were going to see some new exciting cards here sooner than we think. Which will mean price dropping.
