intel discontinued desktop board drivers

is it possible for intel discontinued desktop board users to get driver for windows seven.or i have to purchase new machine which supports windows seven? sorry for bad english & if there is any rules for new threads which i broked.coz i'm new here & don't know anything about rules.(p.s.Tried to find the rules before creating thread but unable to find)

I would say no or at least very unlikely as intel discontinued support for this board late 2006, running windows 7 on a Pentium 4 board is possible but for anything more than very basic tasks it's going to become painfully slow

your next problem with that age of motherboard is lack of ram :huh:

I would suggest save up and get a dual core motherboard to get you started

Hi there

Running W7 on a decent Pentium IV is NOT painfully slow -- the main problem with Pentium IV chips is in the areas of Power consumption and heat dissipation.

A full PIV processor can even give some of the modern Celeron Duo type of processors a run for their money due to bigger cache, longer instruction lengths, better "Pre-fetching" etc etc.

The PIV line was essentially discontinued - especially in Laptops etc because of high power consumption and difficulty of dissipating heat - especially from small laptops.

A 640 GB PIV computer will run W7 quite adequately (X-86 version of course).

Note the standard VGA etc W7 video drivers will probably be OK -- as you've got an X-86 machine maybe VISTA or even XP in compatability mode will work too.


Have a look in the "Older Computers" posts on the Forum -- loads of people have got W7 to run nicely on these type of computers.


DO PLEASE CHECK FACTS before posting -- the PIV is a VERY capable processor and was discontinued not because of Speed but because of power and heat problems.

An old PIV MOBO however is unlikely to be able to have more than 2GB RAM -- probably 1GB will be its max -- but even a 1GB RAM machine can be quite useful -- and you probably can pick up one of these for NOTHING.

I got one from a Tip in S. London when I was working in Croydon on contract and am using it as a server machine I added a disk controller card with 3 extra 1 TB disk drives and am running W2008 Server on it. -- works fine. (Only 2GB - but its only a File / print server and a home streamer for Audio/ Music).

You'll think I'm mad but I'd built some months ago an HTPC to watch & record SD TV, watch some SD/HD ripped videos and MP3/MP4 audio, based on Windows 7 Media Center. The hardware configuration? Let's see...
Motherboard: nVIDIA KT400 (VIA KT400 chipset)
Processor: AMD Athlon XP 2000+ (1,66 GB.)
RAM: 2x256 MB. DDR-266
GPU: nVIDIA GeForce 6200 with 256 MB. of VRAM (helps a lot with EVR )
HDD: Western Digtal, 40 GB., E-IDE, 5400 RPM
Optic drives: 1 DVD-RW generic
PSU: Some-unrecognizable-brand-name 350W
Other devices: Some-other-unrecognizable-brand-name USB remote control won @ $5 in some eBay's auction

Anyway... I can watch TV, record TV, play DVD videos, DivX/XviD movies and some low-profile x264. Of course, can also play MP3 & MP4/AAC audio.
Obviously, I'd spent hours and hours and hours... tuning & tkeaking Windows 7 to get all that working fast but, you can get your old PC working really fast as result. Not as fast as a brand new PC, but close enough to get some guys like me satisfied.
Spanky, if you're running Windows Vista like your profile says, then you can install Windows 7 without problems too and probably your system will run smoothly than using Vista. Windows will install all the drivers automatically. If you miss some driver, you can try some driver that works with Vista.

maybe your idea of slow is different from mine but if you try to use windows 7 with all the whistles and bells then it will be slow on anything less than a dual core (generally speaking) , If you tweak it plenty and turn AERO down or off then it will run well but I wonder if this is the case why even use win 7 ?

unless of course you enjoy the challenge of tweaking and succeeding but i didn't gauge the OP as one of these :huh:

its a very old AOpen AX4R Plus board with Nvidia Geforce 5500fx. and doing its job very well everyday

and best of all is .... no driver missing !

a PIV 2.4 / 2.8 GHZ processor will run RINGS around a typical modern celeron duo processor that's installed in lower and middle range laptops.

As I said before PLEASE TRY using one before pontificating on how "Slow" an old machine will run W7 on.

I'm sure most people on these Forums will know that while we all make mistakes I'm not generally known for publishing a load of unsubstantiated B/S.

The major disadvantage with the older PIV series wasn't speed but HEAT DISSIPATION and POWER CONSUMPTION.

The design has in any case been superceeded by newer and better nano technology -- but that still didn't make the old PIV's slow.

I've still also got an old Sony VAIO GRT 816-S laptop machine which has a PIV processor -- of course I only get about 20 mins battery time on it -- HUGE screen and drinks power like a drain but it's still comparable with my everyday laptop which has 4GB RAM in it and a dual 2.00GHZ T7250 processor when running W7.

(BTW the old laptop runs AERO - no problem at all. OK 1GB RAM is the limiting factor but it still runs blindingly fast. I use it a lot for watching DVD's and the Sky Tv SKY PLAYER -- the Sony screen is still awesome for this purpose).
