Didn't Vista start out at build 6000? Maybe not.......but my Vista with service pack 1 is version 6 Build 6001. Windows 7 will be something like version 7 build 7161. I guess it really does not matter much. haha Just a little strange the way they do things. Maybe these are just "beta builds" and it will be 7000 or 7100 when finished.

To keep this short and sweet; changing the version number from 6... to 7... would cause too many problems as it did when MS did it with Vista, so Windows 7 will be released as version 6??? to relieve driver problems as much as possible.

Very nice assessment. I agree with SoLoR in that RC branch beta builds will be around 7130 to 7150 towards the end of May. It makes a lot of sense that they might brand the actual RC as 6.1.7777. They are using NT 6.1 moniker so that developers can do a version check during beta code development. It will likely remain that way.

Don't let Microsoft snow you. They aren't choosing the NT 6.1 moniker for compatibility. They are choosing the 6.1 moniker because it fits -- it's a revision of Vista, which was NT 6.0.

Just like Windows 2000 was NT 5.0, and
then XP (which was built on Win2k) became NT 5.1.
Then Server 20003 -- which was built on XP -- became NT 5.2.

Vista/Server 2008 was a brand new kernel, built from scratch, and was aptly named NT 6.0.

Windows 7/Server 2008 R2 is built on NT 6.0 and will be NT 6.1.

But then Microsoft chose the stupid "Windows 7" name and was asked "then why isn't it NT 7.0"? Because it can't be -- it's built on Vista! (NT 6.0) So, rather than come clean and admit they chose an illogical "marketing" name for the next consumer OS, they wink and say they made it "NT 6.1" instead of "7.0" for "compatibility". AS I said, look at the server side -- same kernel and they are calling it Server 2008 R2. "Windows 7" IS NT 6.1 and is Vista R2.

What happens when they DO create a brand new kernel and it's NT 7.0? What are they going to call that?

Windows XP RTM was NT 5.1.2600.

Yes -- Vista was NT 6.0.6000.

The official public beta for the Windows 7 was NT 6.1.7000. So, that number is already used.

Microsoft is currently up to Build 7061 or later -- with more to come before official RC at end of May. I predict the official RC or probably even RTM will be Build 7777. 7777 = Windows 7, get it? :sarc:

Windows NT 6.1.7777 would be a nice ironic number for the mis-named "Windows 7" -- which is not the 7th Windows anything. It's "Vista R2", just like on the server side it's going to be Server 2008 R2. At least Microsoft is being refreshingly candid about the server twin to "Windows 7" and calling it by an honest name.

Both "Windows 7" and "Server 2008 R2" will share the same kernel (NT 6.1) and service packs, just like Vista/Server 2008 share the same kernel (NT 6.0).

Build 7061 was sent to Japan testers, it was about localized stuff. It's not a leak, it was a real (past) weekend bug bash that MS wanted to do.
people DO have 7061, it was reported on wzor a while ago but they don't bother leaking these builds out because there are not enough changes in it to make it a worthwhile leak

Can't agree with that -- someone ALWAYS leaks a build just to be the ist person to say "I have it and I did it".

I'm sure this build will hit "the usual places" before long - unless any of these 3 items are tru.

1) Japanese (or Non English) only version
2) Expiry date earlier than current "leaked versions" 01 Mar 2010
3) New sets of Keys needed for activation

In a way this is why I think MS "Tolerates" the leaks -- as it gets a much larger testing platform than it would otherwise do plus loads of extra publicity. -- also it doesn't get its own servers clogged with people trying to do downloads every 5 minutes.

MS could esily stop at a stroke any of these builds from being as useful as they are by just "nullifying" the activation keys.

So there must be SOME collusion -- even at the hihest level --of course they actually can't admit this of course.

(Even some Mac fanboys are trying Windows 7 on their machines --the newer Intel vesions -- No that's a turn around for the book).

Not to be rude, but this was a rather cynical post =/ MS stated plenty of times, and right from the get go, that windows 7 is working on the same vista kernel =/ and they explained just about everything you did.

They said Windows 7 isn't trying to have some sort of an "aspirational" name like XP(eXPerience) or Vista(beautifulness or whatever).

And is the version number thing not true? Could they have not called is 7.0 if they wanted to? Yea, of course they should have called it 6.1 because its running on the vista kernel, but that doesn't change the fact that the version number does indeed help with app compatibility.

Also, I don't see why Windows 7 is a stupid name. I think XP and Vista are more "stupid" than Windows 7.

What would you rather have them call it, Windows Epiphany?

As for it being called 7 or 6.1 kernel etc etc it is just a label so people know what they are dealing with when writing code or drivers etc etc. They (MS) could call it anything they wanted but for ease of knowing what your working with they called it 6.1 kernel and windows 7 well that would be easy its the seventh attempt at a kernel but that just my idea behind it all and I like to think the simplest answer tends to be the correct one.

at least I label my files with easy labels so I know what I am working with, I also label my DVD or CD so I know whats in it kinda like 6.1 and 7 labels.

Its not the final version that we will see as the rc, it was not intended for the public. There are already later builds internally.

Why it's called Windows 7

Guys I read somewhere that Microsoft were thinking of calling it Vienna. Now that would have been silly . As far as I can tell it's the 7th major OS release from Microsoft.
