Installing video driver for Intel 855 Centrino Chipset

Flaming Homer,

I am the author of that tutorial. I tried to post it here for all to use but it said that administrator has to evalutate it. I guess someone deleted it!!!!

Anyway,

It is nice that the tutorial worked for you :) . It took me a while to figure this mess out.

I would advise you to do STEP 6 to bring the vgapnp.sys to usuable state.

Lexxion

Works on a Toshiba A15-S129. Thanks.
Now if I can get some newer drivers to stick so I can enable Aero....
Tom

lexxion, you are THE MAN.

Tricking win7 to not being able to reinstall the generic vga drivers was clever, and finding the driver that worked is golden.

Anyway, used Lexxions Guide on a Dell 700m and it worked perfectly.

Had a bit of a weird scare tho...

The laptop is a bit old and installing the drivers took forever, at least 60 sec. The screen almost immediately went black but the HD kept plugging away. Eventually heard the found new hardware trumpet sound twice, then the HD light stopped. I moved the trackpad, nothing. Hit enter twice, and then heard the windows7 shutdown sound, some more HD activity then a reboot. (I assume there was simply a reboot prompt window open I couldnt see)

Upon restart - viola! Drivers installed with NATIVE RESOLUTION support! Had to manually change to 32bit color. Cant do anything fancy but the main thing is running native resolution.

Its really sad that intel and/or microsoft (mostly intel) cant provide at least simple driver support for older chips like the 855GM... its not like they are uncommon, bizillions of notebooks were sold with them.

Again, thank you sooooo much lexxion.

stuck at step 4.

I think there are 2 things you can do. Make sure your windows account has administrator privileges or instead of typing 'cmd' in search , you should try typing 'notepad' and right click and say that you want to run it as administrator. You might be prompted for admin login. Then you should have notepad running as admin and since you took ownership of the file it should work.

OS
Win XP / Win 7
i've already running in administrator login.
untill step to open c:\windows\system32\drivers\vgapnp.sys
then i right click there is no run as administrator.

means i've already runs as administrator, right?
correct me if i'm wrong.

Thanks lexxion,

Your guide worked a treat on my Toshiba Satellite R10 Laptop/Tablet PC.
Colours were a bit dodgy when I set them to 32bit, but settled down after a reboot.
Everything looks fine now.

Is there any reason why I shouldn't stop after step 5?
After the problems it's caused I'd rather leave vgapnp.sys disabled.

I don't suppose you know how to enable screen rotation as well do you?

Thanks again.

There was a guy here who posted a fix for screen rotation. Just look through this thread going from this page back.

Yes, I'd already tried following KidDynamic's instructions (#118 on p12), but they didn't work for me.

Tried turning my brain on and had another go - slightly different but worked.
Instead of enabling the rotation here:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE / SYSTEM / Software / Intel / CUI
It was here:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE / SOFTWARE / Intel / CUI / DISPLAY1

Took a guess on downloading from Toshiba and util_tvap_vista_25649A.exe works for me (mostly) even though my R10 tablet isn't supported past XP Tablet Edition.

Thanks again Lexxion and KidDynamic, my Tablet's just about useable now.

Dual monitors

Thanks Lexxion! I have everything working on my dell d505, with one exception :(

I have my laptop on a dock and hooked into a secondary monitor via vga. Any suggestions? It is displaying dual display, and when trying to enable the secondary monitor and extend to it the screen refreshes but it keeps going back to dual display instead of extended.

thanks again!

I know I posted here before, but that was build 7100. Naturally had to upgrade versions later down the line. Anyway, the method I used for 7100 didn't work sadly.

Used Lexxion's, and got the same thing as Jcrisp. Works with one monitor, but not a second. I'm guessing it has to be cause of the modified driver, it needs another. I applied another driver to the VGA controller, but having issues with it. Haven't been able to get any long term fix.

To Lexxion: please update your guide with the following.

Even if permission has been grant I am not able to save vgapnp.sys once edited. You must be in "safe mode" to be able to edit and save it. (Windows 7 RTM + updates)

To the other I have a question: I have been able to install the drivers on my Tablet Acer C302XMi which uses the intel 855GME chipset. I am not able to rotate the screen. Have you any solution for me ?

Edit: I have followed this thread and applied the istruction and screen rotation worked.

Only one last thing is missing: the special buttons of the keyboard like "enable wireless" "rotate the screen" are not working.

up:cry:

edit : I've just fixed the problem :

For those who have sleep problem (black screen after resume, for exemple on my Vaio the backlight of the screen stay off) after installing the xp drivers 6.14.10.3722, here is the solution :
Just install the
6.14.10.3732 instead ! And the sleep will work properly ! (I have tried other drivers and more recents too but they always failed)

They are downloadable here :

MANY THANKS TO LEXXION!

Your guide was the only one which worked on my Portege M300. I have tried many different drivers and guides, but your one worked fine for me.

Any of your guys having problems to adjust the brightness on your laptop?

I installed the toshiba tools but I am still not able to change the brightness of my screen.

Cheers!
