Why Windows 7 records screen so badly?

I'm trying to record a screen in 7 using camtasia studio 6, my PC specs:

Intel DG965RY mobo
C2D E6400
4 gigs ram
GeForce 8600GT 256 mb

Running on a resolution 1920x1080 the fps doesn't get higher than 12-15, it's better on a low resolution like 1280x800 (something about 25-27 fps) but it looks crappy...

I saw some screencasts on Youtube where mac os x on original macs is very smooth in the way of recording a screen, but can anyone help, what do I need to record smoothly on Seven? Better video or CPU? Or better software? Thanks a lot!

I suspect the limiting factor is your video card. 256Meg is the absolute minimum for win 7. You can try using a smaller video as a lower res but other than that....

You have a sufficient amount of RAM, and the CPU should be up to the task. But recommend replacing your video card with one that has more punch(Make sure your PS can handle the extra load!). The 8600 GT is a "mainstream" card that's designed to handle video applications less demanding than 1920x1080 screen recording. That's a lot of pixels streaming thru a vid card.

I don't have this problem at all. Have a look at my Vimeo site to compare with your recordings (you can also watch any of the others that are shown on the right side there). I use WMCapture. Maybe you want to try their trial version and see whether that works better.

PS: I now use a Nvidea 9500GT, but I used to have an on-board Nvidea 6150SE and that worked just as well.

What exactly are you recording? And if it is for an online video, why have it in such high resolutions? If you plan on using it for YouTube etc, 1920x1080 is overkill.

Ya, that little dinky graphics card isn't going to record 30 fps at 1920....

I suggest you record on a more capable system.

There is nothing wrong with the graphics card. I recorded 30 fps @ 1680x1050 with a 6150SE without problems.
