New set up still no boot

Hi guys,

As you can see from my system spec I am currently running a old sock A mo/bo and cpu, my win-7 32bit O/S is installed and runs ok (a bit slow but stable)

However, I have just treated myself to some new parts which are, Asus M4A785TD-V EVO Socket AM3 mo/bo, AMD Phenom II X4 955 Black Edition 3.2 GHz Socket AM3 CPU and Kingston 4GB (2x2GB) DDR3 1333MHz HyperX Memory Kit CL7 1.7V Ram. This is the second Asus M4A785TD-V EVO board I have had from Ebuyer as the first one would not boot the screen just stayed black (which is plugged into the on-board D-sub or VGA) However this new replacement board is also doing the same thing.

The board has its power from my old Tagon TG480-U01(480W) psu but it just won’t boot up. As this is the second board they sent me (cpu and ram also changed) I assume something other than the new components are at fault, I have ordered today a new psu a Corsair 650W TX Series, I will report back once it’s been tried but can anyone shed any light in why it won’t boot because I thought the Tagon should be able alright to run it, the Tagon says its ATX ver 2.03 and ATX/ATX12V ver 1.2.

I am using the Tagon psu as I type this back on my old socket A mo/bo (as my spec) when I try it with the ASUS board there is power getting to it as the board led lights up and cpu and system fans are running but no post bleep and black sreen.

I don't know what the problem is, but don't write off the possibility of a second bad MB, because I have had that problem before, with several brands of them, including some Asus A8V-Xs. These MBs are not as sophiscated as your new one, but the fact that it is Asus doesn't make it immune.

If it were me, I would bench check the board by placing it on a non-conductive surface, with nothing connected except the video card, one stick of ram, the power supply (connected to the ATX connector, and to the video card, if it is of the type that has a power connector) and to the monitor. The more of these items that are KNOWN good the better.

Power the rig on by shorting across the power pins on the MB and see if the BIOS screens appear. If not, and you know that the other items are good, then you have another lemon MB.

EDIT: If the above steps doesn't produce a BIOS screen, then swap sticks of ram, and even using a differerent slot than before.

Are you trying to boot your Windows 7 install on the old machine on the new machine? Or are you doing a clean install on the new machine? Or are you saying with no hard drive plugged in the machine never makes it to the BIOS screen? If you are not getting a BIOS screen I would unplug everything you can, hard drive, floppy, any PCI cards, etc. Just video, keyboard, mouse connected, and see if you get a BIOS screen. If you don't start pulling RAM out of the machine. If you still don't pull left over RAM and put the first ones you pulled out back in. Make sure you match them as your mother board user guide states. Check your monitor on a different computer or use a different monitor. If all that fails you may have a 2nd bad mother board.

Yeh I have tried to boot with hdd and dvd rom drive on sata 1 & 2 I have also treid with NOTHING connected, I have tried a different screen as well, I don't have a graphics card as I am trying to use the on board graphics using the 15 pin D-sub.

I will wait for the new psu (comes Tomorrow) and then try everything thats been suggested.

If no good I will ask for a 3rd Mo/bo or maybe go for an MSI one instead.

SUCCESS -Well I tried the new PSU (Corsair 650W TX Series) on a bench with just a psu and screen attached jumped the power terminals and it booted to bios !!!

I then went back to my old system and in device manager I deleted all the chipset drivers, controls, graphics drver, cpu etc etc but did not select the reboot option when prompted. I then switched off and istalled my new psu, mo/bo, cpu and ram.

I switched on and windows found new hardware and installed its drivers for the new board etc. I then restarted and put the Asus driver cd in and installed everything needed then restarted. I then used the Asus update bios and updated that too. I had to reregister my copy of win7 and MS word but thats no problem.


ALL seems to be working very well even though I am on same hdd and o/s as used on my old system, fingers crossed! but its saved me doing a clean install.

I still can't understand why the Tagon psu didn't work it has more than enough power to run the Asus board (Asus say min 300w - Tagon is 480w) and it has more than the minumum recomended watt on +12v, anyway its all sorted now, thanks.
