VPN Help required

You do that on the "server", in your case that would be the machines at your home.

The culprit is as usual ==> WINDOWS FIREWALL !!!

Here's how:

1. Open Windows Firewall, go to it's advanced settings.
2. Click the Inbound Rules.
3. Create a new inbound rule
4. Use a predefined rule, select "File and Printer Sharing".
5. Check the "File and printer sharing (SMB-in)", profile Private, Public
6. Allow the connection
7. Right click the newly created rule, click "Properties"
8. Go to "Scope" tab, "Remote IP address" change to "Any IP address"
9. Hit OK

That should do it.

Had a quick look last night but there are no Inbound Rules on the Firewall for either Vista Ultimate or XP Pro. In the exceptions Printing & File sharing is ticked as an exception so it should let these thru and the look like the right ports.

When I get a chance I am going to disable the firewalls on two of the PC's that have shares and try without the firewalls.

I would have thought though the the VPN should make it look like the remote PC is on the same internal network as the others as it has the same IP group as the internal network and has been given that IP by the internal router via DHCP.

Oh well one can but try all the options

If you do see a rule in inbound for File and Print sharing, check the scope part, make sure its set to "ANY", the problem is, the default scope for File and Printer sharing is local subnet, so everything else is denied.

I'm not sure what I'm seeing here. I see a wireless connection with IP information but everything else shows disconnected. I don't see a VPN tunnel. What kind of VPN connection is this? What client are you using? Is it PPTP? IPSec? SSL?

There are 2 active interfaces, one is the "Wireless LAN adapter JV Wireless" (192.168.1.65), the other one is "PPP adapter To Vigor" (192.168.0.100). Looking at this, the one that initiates the VPN connection is the Laptop, I don't see how a VPN connection initiated by the router would wind up shown in the ipconfig /all on the laptop...

veldthui, can you make a screenshot of the page you were referring, the one you said you'd click on to initiate VPN connection over on your router, please?

I had a sneaking suspicion this was a firewall issue. Good catch zzzz2496!

I can't see what kind of VPN this is. PPP isn't a VPN protocol and I don't see a tunnel.

VPN = Virtual Private Network, you can build a VPN connection using several protocols, PPP for instance can create a connection from one point to another encapsulating the traffic data within the message body of PPP packet, or L2TP can do too, or PPTP... In this case, it's PPP that veldthui use, so it shows as such.

I know what a VPN is. I usually use IPSec instead of PPTP so I'm used to seeing the tunnel identified.

Mine is a PPTP connection but shows as PPP on the Windows 7 IPConfig /all list. On the router it is definately listed as a PPTP VPN connection. Thought I would try the PPTP first and get the connection going and working fully before moving to IPSec connection as it is harder to set up than PPTP. It tends to want fixed IP addresses and I have dynamic IP addresses on both ends. There is a way around this but first the connection working.

Well no luck as yet. I disabled the router firewall and filters. It had filters on WAN->LAN and LAN->WAN traffic for Netbios. Disabled the firewall on 1 PC and set the SMB-In/Out to accept any IP and tried again. No dice on either machine.
Tried a tracert on 192.168.0.7 and it replied back with the correct route of my router at home and then the PC itself which meant it was going through the VPN tunnel. It also identified the PC by name so I tried pinging the PC by name instead of IP and that worked so the NetBios stuff appears to be working. Just wont show any of the PC's or allow me to map the drives.

More investigation required.

veldthui, try disabling every traffic filtering from VPN interface <--> LAN. If I understand correctly, VPN should have it's own "virtual" interface, and it is different than your "WAN" interface. Go check that out.

Success at last - of sorts.

Decided to try TheGreenBow IPSec client software as they have a test server. Tried it and it connected fine but could not get to their drives either. Turns out my Laptop Firewall is blocking it somehow even though I told it to let things through. It is McAfee IS.
Tried my router again and established the IPSec tunnel after a bit of trial and error. Pinged the machines. The router and 1 XP responded but 1 XP and the Vista machine did not. Tried to map a drive and it connected and showed me the contents straight away.
Thinking it was the firewall all the time I tried the PPTP again and while this time it would allow me to map the drive it would not read anything off it. It may have cached the data so it may not have worked afterall.

Anyway I know I can use the IPSec tunnel (although the Greenbow client is quite expensive though nice) so I at least know I can get it working.

Just have to work out why the firewall is blocking it as I don't like my firewall off while connected. I see my router blocking a heap of DOS attacks quite often.

I got tripped up by the McAfee firewall in the past as well. I ended up disabling it then just removing it completely because it was way too intrusive.
