Before I uninstall Win 7 - can anyone help on this?

After a full 2 weeks of battling Windows 7 on a few issues - I believe I have reached the limit on my patience.

Seems that Windows 7 completely changes the "vibe" of Sleep Mode and particularly the way it treats the High Performance plan - with one very un-nerving negative effect.

To wit - for those of you that were running (or are still running) XP or Vista - if you were like me - after a new install - you would immediately ditch the standard power plan and switch everything over to be "on" all the time...until such time that you either shut it down yourself or with the "green" mantra that is prevalent now - you put the machine to sleep (S3).

In both XP and Vista - even with all power plan parameters set to High Performance ("never")...when the machine has been put to sleep manually (by button on keyboard or Start menu or whatever) it would stay asleep until a wakeup event occurs (like my WHS backup @ 1:00am) and then honors the value located in the registry known as the Return To Sleep Timeout...documented here....

Windows 7 - my friends - does not honor this value in any way - even tho the identical values exist in it's registry. Windows 7 marches to it's own drummer and that is the state of the Power Plan. When I installed Windows 7 a couple weeks back - I did as I usually do - I immediate ditched the idiotic Balanced Power Plan...which basically put your machine in a coma if you go to the can for too long - and switched over to High Performance. Along with that change - I set every possible parameter to Never.....including the all important "Sleep after"...parameter.

In Windows 7 - if this parameter is set to Never - it really means NEVER. No matter what you do...especially if you put you machine to sleep and have it wake for the WHS backup...it will NEVER return to sleep. Secondly - if you run with the stock Balanced plan and put you machine to sleep and have it wake for the WHS backup...it should do so - but will return to sleep not in 120 seconds as it should via the Return to Sleep Timeout value - No - it will return to sleep some 30 minutes later as per the Balanced Plan sleep timeout.

Basically 7 is dead to me if this is the case. Not only are the Power Plans ass-backward...your power savings are non-existent if the machine is on all night (when on High) or while it plays dumb burning cycles for another 30 minutes while doing nothing (under Balanced).

So before I wipe the drive - can anyone out there confirm that they indeed have a High Performance plan in play and can confirm their Windows 7 PC actually goes back to sleep after 120 seconds following an unattended wakeup event?

Appreciate any input...even if someone could do a quick test via Task Manager to see if a machine (when in sleep mode) will wake, do something and go back to sleep in around a 2 minute timeframe...

Also, I don't find the balanced plans idiotic at all. If you don't need your machine running at full tilt to provide full desktop performance...why not ratchet a few things back to save power. The box scales it right back the instant that it's needed.

I never use sleep mode or hibernation here. The one problem seen is the display turning off after 20 minutes despite being set to never ironically with the High Performance or custom power plan created.

When creating a second custom plan with the exact same name you then see two by the same listed. Generally the largest problem seen are when coming out of sleep or hibernation for many where device drivers need to refreshed with a full restart or face issues would sound usually due to the drivers becoming inactive.

As far as XP, Vista, 7 I certainly won't be going backwards to XP! Once the new build is together Vista will die with this build while 7 finds a permanent home! Perhaps SP1 for 7 will address that and other hibernation problems once the first service pack is available. 7 so far has had far fewer bugs to work out then previous versions!

I did the tutorial and still no joy. This machine could care less if it's two minutes or 2 seconds...it will not go back to sleep at all.

And regarding the balanced plan...I just can't be bothered waking this thing up 9 times a day...and it's always when I need the machine on...it's bloody snoring...Also - depending on what's running (I tested this) it doesn't work anyway.

I did a full reset on the Balanced plan (hoping to get my WHS backup straightened out). I ran a full work day with the monitor to sleep in 25 minutes and computer to sleep in 30 - and everything else under the plan at stock default...so I go have dinner and come back 45 minutes later - monitor is off but the box itself it still howling away all powered up. Isn't it supposed to be sleeping?

For 2 years straight with Vista...the box is on when I need it and sleeps/wakes/does it's tasks/sleeps perfectly when I am sleeping. That's what I need.

Sorry - it should either do what it says it's supposed to do or I may as well just leave it on. After researching this for 2 straight weeks- the amount of threads and issues that I dug up web-wide indicate that MS has got some f-ed up power management code in here.

I know that mine works as it's supposed to. I've gotten burned on the last 2 machines that I built with Windows 7 for work because I neglected to touch the power plans and they both powered off and didn't perform the task I was testing by morning.

Well...say what you will about XP - but sleep mode works flawlessly here for another machine. Haven't had a sleep related problem ever with that box...same for Vista...no issues that I can recall.

Don't get me wrong - I really like 7 but I really need my Home Server working properly especially it's backup functions (we have two home businesses here) - especially when there is no work involed on my part (backup @ 1:00am) and they outweigh the use of 7 for now.

I remember the same stuff with Vista - it didn't get real good until the first SP was out...most likely this will be ironed out...even on the official MS boards they are acknowledging issues with power management so there is some work to be done....

Interesting. I am running Professional here...I wonder if there is something else at play. So - when you say High Perf...did you "high perf" it without making any additional changes or did you edit each parameter under the plan? I have been screwing around with settings for weeks to no avail.

The system log doesn't even record a single instance of even trying to go back to sleep...it writes the wake-up events fine and then just sits there for hours on end. And I have shut off every bit of hardware, tasks...anything that could possibly be keeping it awake....

The reports now indicate all support will be dropped for XP SP2 and Vista RTMs as of July 14th 2010. Many reported SP2 for Vista made a large difference there while things are actually looking up for 7 by late fall or just when 7's SP1 is out.

Even before then it's possible a fix will become avbailable in an update since the hibernation issues seems to be the one item seen with 7 so far. The one constant problem here with a full shutdown daily is Windows not remembering the never turn off display settings once powering up or after any system restart.

What's really odd is the first retail install before a new drive was added in for a second 64bit install does remember now while the second 64 and recent 32bit for a multiboot run into that problem. But 7 is still only out of the crate for a few months at this point.

Many reported SP2 for Vista made a large difference there while things are actually looking up for 7 by late fall or just when 7's SP1 is out.

That's my take. Vista Business (specifically) SP2 - is the best experience that I have had with MS OS's in a long long while. For my particular needs - it is outstanding in all aspects.

I just thought it might be time to give Win 7 a legit shot - but seems there are issues still lurking....

No biggie...I can always try again mid year or in the fall....

The other option is simply to do what I do here and never use the sleep or hibernate modes. Vista was definitely a larget step up from XP and all the problems seen there but wasn't performance minded after all the delays. The added weight of the new themes and gadgets as well as background services are what took a toll while it was much more stable.

7 was a big turnaround for MS and hopefully will progress further with the following versions to come. But it's still new out of the box and like any other version something needs to be fixed! At least you can run 7 "out of the box" without the first SP however!

Just an update on this - I did a fresh Vista 64SP2 install yesterday and by only changing a single thing - the Power Plan to High Performance - this PC is sleeping and waking and backing up and then sleeping like a baby.

I literally made that one single change...no playing around with powercfg stuff...no checking Power Management tabs...no waking in the middle of the night because of some "mystery" hardware setting....no nothing. Just a blissful sleeping machine when I came down with my morning coffee. And a successful WHS backup @12:20am

So - Windows 7 - with your bright and shiny outlook - your older brother beats you hands down the Sleep Mode department.

Hopefully a service pack (or two) will help in this area....
