Following the leaked details related to Windows 7 and Windows Server 2008 R2 Build 6.1.7700.0.100122-1900, one question still remains unanswered. Is Build 6.1.7700.0.100122-1900 the first step to Windows 8 and Windows 8 Server, or just part of the development process on the way to Windows 7 Service Pack 1 and Windows Server 2008 SP1. There’s no way of answering this, at least not for the time being, and not with Microsoft keeping mum on the evolution of the Windows client and server. But one thing is certain: Windows 7 Build 6.1.7700.0.100122-1900 is real and a proof that Microsoft is already hard at work on the evolution of Windows.

Who needs Windows 8? Windows 7 just came out, and 3 years is too short of a time to be releasing a new OS.

I think they need to make some major upgrades to the UI, there are to many settings that need extra software to turn off and on, customization should be the next big thing. I say this because if you look at cell phones or just walk around target and see how everything has a customized look to it, isn't it about time to release a windows version that is easy (and built in) to customize. Shoot they could even sell UI's for business, hospitals, schools, gamers, programmers well you get the idea.

Hi there
A "Customized" UI already exists -- I think it's called LINUX:D.

I LIKE Windows because it's WINDOWS and I know how it behaves on almost any computer I run it on -- Customisation of the desktop with regard to pictures, applications, fonts and colors is already OK IMO.

While Linux servers are fine - each installation is different and you usually have to go through all sorts of hoops and rings to get stuff to work.

A business environment needs a reasonably standardized OS which Windows supplies. Imagine having to maintain 1000's of different versions of Linux etc. A small office without an IT dept probably would have trouble maintaining even as few as 5 different versions of Linux.

I'm not anti the Penguin by any manner of means - but I think reasonable standardisation of the OS is actually one of the great strengths of Windows.

The next incarnation of the OS will probably be a very small Windows kernel which will load and run applications from "The Cloud" and be essentially Browser based.

I suspect the new build is probably making progress towards this end.

If you like the Command Line interface then unless you switch to Linux the writing is actually on the wall.

The crazy thing about "Cloud" computing is that you won't really need powerful hardware anymore since the cloud apps will run on backend remote servers.

All you'll need will be a decent Graphics display and a fast Internet connection. A Netbook Atom processor plus some decent graphics capability for driving LARGE High Definition (and possibly 3-D) monitors might be all that's needed in future.

This will be strange - I'm not sure how the hardware vendors will adapt their business models but the NEXT generation of computers could be significantly less powerful than today's and we wouldn't actually suffer any loss in usefulness either.

Cheers

I don't think Microsoft will immediately start Windows 8. They will atleast market Windows 7 for an year and then start focusing on their next product. Further, Windows 7 is a successful OS after XP and hence, they will be concentrating on the Service Packs !

I think they've already began working on it. Also, I don't work at Microsoft obviously, although I believe they have separate teams for Service Packs and Operating Systems.

Somehow I doubt Windows 8 will be geared towards cloud computing. It may work it in there in a small way, but based on it, I don't think so.

I agree. Personally I'd rather see Windows 8 pushing 64-bit.

I've heard there is a 128-bit of it and distributed as trial version of Win 8, but I think it's too early to start publishing for Win 8, they need more than to 2011 or 2012 for move like that.
People just started to get along with win 7.

Some of us have been playing with 7 bits for over a year now. We're ready when they are. Wouldn't suprise me if they have created some bits by now, but nothing to distribute very widely.

But I do agree, they will be focusing on SPs for the time being.

Also think about when the first 64-bit machines came out. Although I doubt they will optimize it for 128, it is most definitely a theory.

I hope the stay away from the cloud, as for Linux I know how to spell it, other then that I want nothing to do with it. As for my dislike for cloud well the security and trust factors involved are just beyond what I want of my personal files and artwork.

I can say that I like the 64 bit or beyond though, since getting this laptop and 64bit 7 I have liked it a lot. Didn't think I would find the software but seems most things I use can be found free these days with 64 bit version avail.

Now what I mean by customizable, for example a gamers windows I could see graphic options avail to set options quickly in a sidebar gadget, no fancy graphic for the desktop on, etc. I have seen GUI apps for windows that change the feel etc. Think there's a group here making a custom UI with the core of another app already avail. I could imagine an option when windows starts and you could set the mode for windows, and with options for gaming, movie watching, business apps, graphic design. Basically it would be a theme on steroids or you could just boot into full windows. Laptops could benefit from this as they could disable and power down parts they don't need.

I like the copy/move to folder option but don't like how I need 3rd party software to enable it with right click. I also liked XP's ability to customize the tool bar, I would add delete and other options to reduce the amount of mouse clicks I used. I could edit files/reg to get these options but they should be avail by default IMHO.

Hi there
A lot of the problems with "The Cloud" are really based on Misconception.

Of course people will want to SECURE their own data locally and the cloud won't prevent that - You'll always have LOCAL storage available. Look at the total abject failure of "Diskless Workstations" that were all the rage a few years ago.

Quite frankly if I'm using say Office or other "Standard" applications I really couldn't care if the Server is on Planet Mars or my local PC so long as it works when I switch the computer on and has the Interface I'm used to.

For a lot of Work applications this will be a GODSEND as you should be able to access these applications from ANYWHERE (assuming authorized).

Some local apps won't disappear of course but the number of these will be really minimized in the future.

The main drawback to "The Cloud" will be if "Corporate Greed" gets in the way -- excessive and exhorbitant fees will kill the concept STONE DEAD.

A better way of "charging" for us as consumers would be to have this all included with your Internet Package.

I really don't have any problems with using applications from "The Cloud" if suitable -- however the interface must be based on existing apps -- I don't like Windows LIVE at all so if it goes in that direction then game over.

Cheers
jimbo

Hi there
another complaint people have against "The Cloud" is that the Internet might not be on when you want it.

I think in the future it's not very likely -- for example in most large cities in Europe / Austrailia, US etc how often do you find that your Mobile Phone doesn't work -- probably never.

The Internet will become as ubquitious as the mobile phone network.

I would much rather not have to keep installing applications and updates if I don't have to.

I would much rather spend my time on say developing new applications or just USING stuff that's already out there.

Just also think of the EASE of testing new apps or versions -- just logon to the appropriate server and away you go.

OK there will be some security considerations - but note if you are running on "The Cloud" then the Virus won't be on YOUR machine in any case.

I can see my local PC just being used as a multi-media streaming centre, a local data storage repository and a printing facility.

No problems with that if the problems can be sorted out.
Would sure make life a lot easier too.

(However it would also make this excellent Forum redundant -- that's the only Downside of the Cloud as far as I can see).

Cheers
