A quick (BEd: Can it be anything other than quick?) tweet on one of Nvidia's Twitter accounts has revealed that the first two cards based on the GF100 GPU aill be known as GeForce GTX 480 and GTX 470.

i just want it to touch down now, i was gonna loose ATI & jump back to Nvidia (my first love), but the 5970 is really starting to excel with the newer drivers, so im gonna go TriFire with a 5770 & then chuck in a dedicated PPU (once i grab an X48)

once Fermi is released there's gonna be an ocean of lower end 5 series cards up for grabs b/c everyone is gonna make the jump...

ATI have failed to listen to customers & are far to sloppy in the driver development department for millions of ppl, so hopefully i'll use their failure to my advantage...

Nope, the series rule still applies 57xx+57xx, or 58xx+58xx and since the 5970 is 58xx architecture, it can only be tried fired with another 58xx

after checking it seems the only CFX options i have are 58xx cards, not all 5xxx cards (still a little green with this ATI stuff)

that's a shame, im not paying for a 58xx card..... it was only an option when i could run the cheaper 5 series cards.

once fermi is released cheap ATI cards will be everywhere & grabbing a 5750-5770 would of worked out well..

who knows...i may still wanna jump ship when Nvidia's offering touches down.

TBH mate, tri-fire would be more hassle than it's worth.

Outside of the benchmark/e-peen area, there are still very few games that will benefit from tri fire due to scaling issues. The majority still suck balls with a dual setup, let alone 3+

The 5850's will drop in price eventually, it just may take quite a bit longer than everyone is hoping for.


I've got my eyes on the new nvidia 480 too...

I know there majority of 'info' so far is sheer speculation/hype, but I hope that at least 25% of it is true.

1.... Nvidia = great driver support & 0 incompatibility rubbish.

2.... Nvidia are able to produce far more power (chip for chip) than ATI can, Fermi WILL be incredibly quick

but....... the heat of these chips will be their ''Achilles heel'', if these actually end up running hotter than the GT200 range there's gonna be a problem.

ATI's ''Evergreen'' range are simply amazing for heat output & power consumption, if Nvidia stumbles it'll be b/c of the price, or the heat.

Not quite true. In an old rig, I have to use a much older driver because newer versions disable video output via DVI on my 7600GS. VGA is fine.

Apart from the odd dud here and there though, they are better than the Cat team at drivers

Price = almost certainty.
Heat = yeah One suspects these will not be quiet beasts.

eh i ain't counting on anything they say till i see some real benches.... so far they have showed none...

We asked one of the many VPs around us and we learned that when Jensen says Q1 2010 he means Nvidia’s fiscal Q1 rather than real people’s Q1. Nvidia’s Q1 starts in January and ends on April 30th so the worst case scenario for Nvidia is to launch a card sometime in April.

and even when they finally launch....... it will push the 5990 in and i can't wait to see the benches on that beast if it pans out

This is interesting, but I'll upgrade when my 4890 can't max out any new game with filtering off @ 1080p/35FPS+. That is unlikely for a while give or take Stalker: Call of Pripyat or Crysis 2, not to mention new games annoyingly will still most likely use DirectX 9.0c, and that will never stress my 4890 - like Mass Effect 2.

At least Bioshock 2 recommends 3GB of RAM, with support for x64 and DirectX 10.

I agree Frostmourne, my machine plays pretty much all games so perfectly using my single GTX 280 I can't hardly think of a reason to upgrade my GPU.

Although doubling the frame rate plus DX11 might be worth it. These new cards might make the games play even better if the drivers are good.

I'll wait until the price drops down a bit and see what other Nvidia cards come out.
