The reasons why you should stay away of norton 2010

This is my first thread, hope its fine mods. ;)

I've been using kaspersky 2010 and last year 2009 (i still have two more years available in my license) however, last night i got tired of it, i was not able to install a wireless adapter because of it and nobody could help me (linksys included) until i search in this forum for the solution. I swear not to use it again it slows my internet speed too.

I remember using norton 2001 in the same year, it worked fine then.. i don't remember quite well, i think it was 2003 when norton became a resource eater and i've never used it again, today i gave it a try to version NIS 2010 and it was very friendly, however i've read in this forums that i should stay away of it.

Could you please comment what happened in these years? why should i stay away of it?, im very interested of reading your comments people.

IMO Norton has too many pop up's and bells and whistles every few minutes.

You will get all kinds of opinions about anti virus software on this forum. Most of these opinions are from users who have alot of experience with various programs. MSE, Avast, and AVG seem to be the most popular among the folks here at SevenForums, and you probably won't go wrong with using any of them. I personally use Norton 360, mainly because I got a free disk with my two new Dell laptops that I purchased a couple months ago. I currently use it on two laptops running 7 premium, and on my desktop which is running 7 ultimate. I have not had any trouble whatsoever on any of my machines, and 360 runs silently in the back ground, has no popups, and uses very little system resources. I am completely happy with it. Norton 360 also includes PC security, ID protection, Backup, and PC tune up. As far as Norton 2010 is concerned, I am not familiar with it, so I can't give you an opinion on it either way. I'm sure there are numerous threads on here that can give you lots of great advice. Good luck on your choice. :D

Wonder why I never see 'em???

psikofunkster: Absolutely nothing wrong with NIS 2010, It an excellent product that continues to be slapped around because of all the BS they produced from 2004 to 2009. Of course if we held everyone to the same standard we wouldn't be running Windows 7 would we... ;)

Several people have also had problems with Kaspersky. It seems it has an Applications Control that blocks Google Chrome from being able to connect to the Internet. Spyware Doctor prevents this as well.

I like Avg 9 free and Superantispyware. I loved Eset Internet Security. But it was way too expensive.

NIS has been much improved over the last two years. It is one of the very very few antivirus software that support the windows 7 jumplists. It also has a great interface, and has a much faster engine than in the past.

Norton till 2008 was very hungry on resources. But come 2009, it has redeveloped the wheels very fast. And 2010, was very light on systems. Be it, detection or updates, everything was silky smooth. No irritant pop-ups unless u r welcomed by a virus. Go for it and u will never regret ur decision. I have personally used NIS and N360. Both are good.

hi dre@mas, and what do you tell me about norton's false positive? i've been told that its not good in that aspect, and what about that story that symantec infected many pc's through their servers?

Hi valtonray, i tested MSE but i didn't like it for two reasons:

it blocked Torrents Search Engine and it doesn't update so frequently as the rest of the AV (so you have to do it literally manually if you want to check for new definitions more than once in a day).

^^ it does update automatically and heard some kind of update this is, which is very effective. I am not able to remember it well.

False positive is not only in Norton. Its there in MSSE too. Its based on certain signatures and ppl use keygens which is automatically termed as an trojan but we tend to use it.
AFA server infection, its news to me.

Really? a couple of week ago didn't, yes you can schedule one daily update at a certain time but both know that is not enough nowadays...

All AV will have the occasional false Positive. you just dont want on that gets too many.

As far as Norton, it does very well in that department, is also one the best in that department meaning High det. rate/few false positives.

NIS2010 is very good. Not the crap it was several years ago by any means.
